A newly released teaser for the Netflix 2023 slate has revealed our first look at Rebel Moon, the science fiction epic from Man of Steel and Army of the Dead director Zack Snyder. The footage teases a grim and gritty sci-fi story, which comes with plenty of action, of course, as The Mummy and Kingsman: The Secret Service star Sofia Boutella takes the lead alongside Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, and Djimon Hounsou.

Directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, Rebel Moon is Snyder’s vision for creating his own Star Wars-esque franchise. "A peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius,” the official synopsis for Rebel Moon reads. “The desperate civilians dispatch Kora, a young woman who has a mysterious past to seek out warriors from nearby planets to help them challenge the regent."

Carving out its own lore and crafting a timeless tale of heroes and villains, this first look at Rebel Moon reveals that the movie will once again be comprised of the kind of epic visuals that the filmmaker behind the likes of 300 and Zack Snyder's Justice League has become well-known for. Let’s just hope the script is as strong...

Led by Sofia Boutella as Kora, a young woman with a mysterious past sent to save the galaxy from Balisarius, Rebel Moon features an all-star supporting cast that includes The Gentlemen star Charlie Hunnam, Justice League’s Ray Fisher, and Gladiator star Djimon Hounsou as General Titus, general of Balisarius' armies. Additionally, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Cary Elwes, Stuart Martin, Alfonso Herrera, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Staz Nair, and Ray Porter also star, with Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins providing the voice of Jimmy, a sentient mechanized battle robot.

Rebel Moon Takes Major Inspiration from Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai

Rebel Moon
Netflix

Rebel Moon will take major inspiration from legendary director Akira Kurosawa, specifically his 1954 masterpiece, Seven Samurai. “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It's my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure,” Snyder previously said of Rebel Moon. “My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out... I've spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I've been doing designs, constantly drawing, and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.”

It has now been revealed that Rebel Moon will premiere on Netflix at the end of this year on Dec. 22, 2023. A sequel, currently known as Rebel Moon Part 2, has already been confirmed and is expected to be shot back-to-back with the first outing.

Rebel Moon is just one of several major projects due to land on the streaming service this year and will be joined by the likes of You People on Jan. 27, Luther: The Fallen Sun on Mar. 10, Murder Mystery 2 on Mar. 31, The Mother on May 2, Extraction 2 on Jun. 16, and The Killer on Nov. 10.
