While Netflix has not yet officially put in the order for a Red Notice sequel, director Rawson Marshall Thurber believes the best course of action would be to turn the story into a trilogy by shooting the next two installments back to back. Written and directed by Thurber, the movie is led by an A-list cast as it stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds. After an initial release in theaters, Red Notice started streaming on Netflix on Nov. 12.

Netflix put a lot of investment into this project, and developing Red Notice did not come cheap. Fortunately, it has paid off in terms of viewership, as the movie had the highest debut of any Netflix original movie debut in the company’s history. This significant success may lead to Red Notice 2, and in a new interview with THR, Rawson Marshall Thurber spoke about the likelihood of a sequel. The director teased that it’s a “real possibility” and that if it happens, it will probably come with a third installment alongside it.

”I think that is a real possibility. If we were to make a sequel, the only responsible thing would be to make two and three back-to-back. It’s such a big production, and if you can mount it one time, it will be better for everyone. Including for my mental health.”

If Red Notice brought in such high viewership with its premiere on Netflix, then why hasn’t a sequel been greenlit? It might have something to do with the response from critics, as it sits at a weak 35% rotten rating at Rotten Tomatoes. The good news is that casual viewers are enjoying it, as it has a 92% audience score. There are many people who seem to agree that the movie isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but its still a fun watch made all the better by its excellent cast. In his THR interview, Rawson Marshall Thurber notes how the movie’s high budget didn’t make much difference to him personally.

”It makes no difference to me whether it’s the most expensive or the least expensive. If I’m making a movie that has a $1 million budget or a $100 million budget, I sweat it the same amount. Because every time somebody puts money up for art, they expect a hit. So every time you step up to the plate, you’re 0-for-0.”

The Rock also seemed to tease a future for Red Notice after its release on Netflix. Taking to Instagram, he touted the movie setting the new record at Netflix for the biggest opening ever as well as its high audience score. The Rock then said that there was “more to come,” showing some confidence that the story of Red Notice will continue in some capacity.

It remains to be seen if Red Notice gets a sequel. It does seem likely, given the impressive record it's set at Netflix along with the interest of Dwayne Johnson and Rawson Marshall Thurber in continuing the story. For now, the new movie can be found streaming on Netflix. You can check out the full interview with the director at The Hollywood Reporter.
