Netflix took notice of the immense success of Red Notice and now it seems like the streamer wants plenty more where that came from. Deadline reports that two sequels have entered development month after the original was released. Reportedly, the plan is to shoot both movies back to back sometime in 2023. Netflix hasn't provided an official comment on the report.
Original writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber has begun writing the new installments, and word is the plan is also to bring back the three lead stars from the first movie: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds. Netflix is also reportedly hoping to add new characters to further flesh out an impressive ensemble cast in the vein of Oceans Eleven. Beau Flynn is producing under his Flynn Pictures Co banner alongside Johnson, Hiram Garcia, and Dany Garcia through Seven Bucks Productions. Thurber is producing via Bad Version Production with Flynn Picture Co's Scott Sheldon executive producing.
Red Notice follows an Interpol agent who partners up with the world's most wanted art thief to catch an elusive crook. It was a tremendous risk for Netflix to take on the film as the budget came with a $200 million price tag, including its lead stars' salaries. If the film would have flopped completely, it would have been a big blow for Netflix. Now that the company is much more confident in the prospects of more Red Notice movies, they're doubling the investment by filming two at once, and with added big name cast members, those could end up being even more expensive to produce.
Red Notice Is the Most-Watched Movie on Netflix, But for How Long?
After its release on Netflix, Red Notice smashed it way past Bird Box to become the most-watched movie on the streaming service. It was an acknowledgment celebrated by The Rock, who posted about the news on Instagram. The actor also teased more to come, suggesting that he wanted to do a sequel.
"I think ultimately it's the fans that dictate if they want a sequel, we'll be ready to deliver them one," producer Hiram Garcia recently said. "But there was never really a talk about doing some kind of post-credits scene because we always knew how we wanted the movie to end. We knew we wanted to tee up something big, but we didn't feel that there was really any need for any kind of a post-credits scene. I think we have ideas in our head in terms of where we'd like the story to go, and if the fans respond to the movie the way we're hoping they will, then it's on us to be ready to deliver that, and we do have some really good ideas on deck."
The plans at this time, according to Deadline, will be for Red Notice 2 & 3 to both film sometime next year. For now, you can find the original Red Notice streaming on Netflix.
