Uma Thurman has joined the cast of Amazon's upcoming romantic comedy Red, White & Royal Blue, Deadline announced in an exclusive article this morning. The Golden Globe-winning actress will be joining the cast as U.S. President Ellen Claremont.

“I am overjoyed that Uma will be joining us to play President Claremont,” said director Matthew López. “Her intelligence, warmth, and humor are a perfect match for Casey’s iconic character. I cannot wait to be on our Oval Office set with her.”

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Casey McQuinston, Red, White & Royal Blue follows the Mexican-American Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez) who is suddenly thrust into the public spotlight when his mother (Thurman) is elected as President of the United States. Normally an all-around American darling, Alex finds himself forced into a faux friendship with British royal rival Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) as damage control following a public altercation. As the friendship grows genuine and begins to blossom into something more, the two are forced to keep their relationship a secret in order to not complicate Alex's mother's re-election.

The rom-com will also star the previously announced Clifton Collins Jr., Stephen Fry, Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, Ellie Bamber, Annesh Sheth, Polo Morin, Ahmed Elhaj, and Akshay Khanna.

Collider reports that Red, White & Royal Blue will be the directorial debut from Tony Award-winning playwright Matthew López; López also wrote the screenplay from an earlier draft by Ted Malawer. The film is set to be produced by Greg Berlanti and Schechter under Berlant/Schechter Films. López, author Casey McQuinston, and Michael McGrath will serve as executive producers.

Although queer representation in media has always been historically lacking (or at least not accessible to a large audience), things have made a turn in the past few years. With streaming services hosting classics and releasing original content, there's been a surge of LGBTQ+ representation in media. From Hulu's Love, Victor to Netflix's Heartstopper, Red, White & Royal Blue will be joining an extensive catalog.

There's no word yet on a release date yet, but Red, White & Royal Blue is set to head into production this month in the UK; the film will ultimately premiere on Prime Video in more than 240 countries.
