Spider-Man: Homecoming star Jacob Batalon has boarded Syfy's Reginald the Vampire, an hourlong dramedy based on Johnny B. Truant's Fat Vampire book series. Best known for his breakout role as Ned Leeds in Spider-Man: Homecoming and its sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home, this will be the first starring role on the small screen for Batalon. The show has already been given a series order with ten episodes to air on an undetermined date in the future on Syfy.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Reginald the Vampire follows Reginald Baskin (Batalon), an unlikely hero who "tumbles headlong into a world populated by beautiful, fit and vain vampires as an unlikely hero who will have to navigate every kind of obstacle - the girl he loves but can't be with, a bully manager at work and the vampire chieftain who wants him dead. Fortunately, Reginald discovers he has a few unrecognized powers of his own."

Harley Peyton (Twin Peaks, Chucky) is penning the script for Reginald the Vampire and will also serve as series showrunner. Jeremiah Chechik is on board to direct. Peyton and Chechik are executive producing with Todd Berger and Lindsay Macadam with Julile DeCresce serving as co-executive producer. Great Pacific Media and Modern Story Company are collaborating on the project.

"It's about a guy who's very overweight and out of shape when he's turned into a vampire," Truant previously said of the concept of Fat Vampire. "The idea came up on a podcast I co-host when we wondered why vampires are always 'perfect and beautiful.' Does vampirism really just make you thin? Or does it freeze you where you are? So this book starts with that premise - what if you were turned into a 'fat vampire,' and frozen that way for eternity?"

The Fat Vampire book series was first published in 2012, consisting of six titles:Fat Vampire, Tastes Like Chicken, All You Can Eat, Harder Better Fatter Stronger, Fatpocalypse, and Survival of the Fattest. They also spawned the offshoot series The Vampire Maurice. The author Johnny B. Truant has also penned the sci-fi novel series Invasion, but the Fat Vampire series will be the first live-action adaptation of his work.

Of Reginald, Truant added: "Reginald is a guy who is quite down on himself at the start of the novel, but who grows as we learn more about him. He's a 350 pound guy working at a fitness supply company with a bunch of perfect-looking male model types. When he becomes a vampire, he again feels dogged by the 'perfect' vampires, but soon realizes he has abilities that they lack... and has those in spades."

After appearing as Ned Leeds in Tom Holland's previous Spider-Man movies, Batalon will next reprise the role once again for this year's sequel Spider-Man: No Way Home. He also had cameos in the role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The young actor's other big screen credits include Blood Fest, Banana Split, The True Don Quixote, and Let it Snow.

A release date hasn't yet been set for Reginald the Vampire at Syfy. Meanwhile, you can next catch Batalon returning as Ned Leeds when Spider-Man: No Way Home is released in theaters on Dec. 17, 2021.
