If you didn't catch Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City on the big screen, you'll now have your chance to visit the zombie-infested city by streaming the new film at home. The film is now available to rent on demand, and to help promote it, Sony has also released the first nine minutes of the movie online for everyone to watch for free. To see if this video game adaptation is for you, you can get a great feel of it by watching the footage below, per IGN.

The official synopsis reads: "Returning to the origins of the massively popular Resident Evil franchise, fan and filmmaker Johannes Roberts brings the games to life for a whole new generation of fans. In Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, once the booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City is now a dying Midwestern town. The company's exodus left the city a wasteland...with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, a group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night."

As this movie is very heavily inspired by the source material, fans of the games will instantly recognize the characters. The movie stars Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy, with Donal Logue as Chief Brian Irons and Neal McDonough as William Birkin. The movie is produced by Robert Kulzer, James Harris, and Hartley Gorenstein. Executive producers are Martin Moszkowicz, Victor Hadida, Jeremy Bolt, and Paul W.S. Anderson.

This can be seen as an interesting experiment from Sony, and it leaves the future of the Resident Evil franchise unclear. The biggest complaint fans had with the prior movies that starred Milla Jovovich was that they had very little in common with the original video games. Many fans had said they would have preferred something with more horror and less action, like the original two Resident Evil games, along with the inclusions of the locations and characters from those games.

Johannes Roberts, a big fan of the video games himself, sought to fill this need by developing Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. It's certainly much more like the games than the previous movies, but it's brought about mixed opinions from viewers. Some fans have been stoked to see the game brought to life this way by Roberts and the cast, while the reviews haven't exactly been kind. Box office returns are also nothing like the Jovovich films, and as of now, Sony hasn't committed to a sequel to Welcome to Raccoon City.

Maybe the film will find a stronger following on streaming. Should this new movie series continue with a sequel, Roberts has teased incorporating storyline elements of Resident Evil 4, another popular game from the series. If that's the case, we could expect Avan Jogia to be back in the lead. You can watch Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City in theaters and on demand.
