Oh dear, the Reylo fans are going to feel this one. With many of the fanbase finding some solace in the fact that The Rise of Skywalker at the very least gave them the romantic kiss between Rey and Kylo Ren that they had been crying out for, director J.J. Abrams has arrived to pour a big bucket of ice water on this star-crossed love story.

Apparently things are not as simple as all that, as one fan managed to get a rather telling comment from Abrams, and it now seems that the lip-locking moment the Reylo fans had been looking forward to is a lot stranger than they had been led to believe.

"There's as much of a brother and sister thing with Rey and Kylo Ren as there is romantic. So it's not literally a sexually/romantic kind of thing. It's more like they're just bound together in this crazy, spiritual way. Again, felt romantic to me."

Well, that is sure to leave many fans feeling a little bit iffy when they watch the series back. J.J. Abrams did not stop there, and even likened the whole dynamic to Luke and Leia's entanglement in The Empire Strikes Back.

"It's like John Williams, if you listen to the --when he first wrote the Luke theme. It was a romantic theme for Luke and Leia. That was kind of what he was thinking because he didn't know where it was going."

A major difference there of course is that surely Abrams had some idea where he was going with Rey Palpatine and Ben Solo's relationship. Though if he didn't that would explain some of the more peculiar choices in The Rise of Skywalker. Still, this declaration from Abrams is now being celebrated by some of the anti-Reylo group, with many of them seeing it as clear victory.

"IT WAS NOT A ROMANTIC KISS! IT WAS MORE A LEIA AND LUKE KISS. A SIBLINGS KISS. AND REY AND KYLO WAS IN THE OLD DRAFTS SIBLINGS! JJ I LOVE YOU! ANTIS! WE WON!"

No matter what Abrams claims, there is no doubt that Reylo fans will continue to interpret the relationship as romantic, whilst others will see it as a brother and sister...who share a passionate kiss.

For those still unaware at what exactly happens come the movie's climax, the two come together having beaten Emperor Palpatine, with Kylo Ren aka Ben Solo healing Rey using the force. They look into each other's eyes and make the Reylo shippers dreams come true as they share a kiss before Ben disappears like so many force-users before him. Adding to the brother and sister suggestion, and confusing matters further, in the movie's final moments Rey takes the name 'Skywalker', accepting them as the family she always wanted.

Are they lovers or siblings? You can decide for yourself as The Rise of Skywalker is out now. This comes from @riseofkylo Twitter
