Knives Out and its sequel Glass Onion have redefined the murder mystery genre for a new generation, with comical moments being intricately woven into a stone-cold serious whodunit plot that can stand up with the best old fashioned Agatha Christie stories. But what if Knives Out 3 included a Muppet twist?

That is the question that was posed during a Q&A session with Glass Onion’s Rian Johnson and some of the stars of the movie, including Daniel Craig on Netflix’s Tudum blog. While the idea of a Muppet murder mystery is something that Johnson admitted to thinking about in a serious way, the likelihood of it happening seems to be quite remote. However, stranger things have happened in the world of movie cross-overs. Currently, Johnson’s thoughts are:

“It's a joke that I thought was pretty brilliant, and I ended up really giving [it] some serious thought... As much as I take the murder mystery genre seriously, I take the genre of a Muppet movie seriously... I think those two things have very different rules. You can either have a Benoit Blanc mystery that has Muppets in it, but they'll feel out of place. Or you can have a Muppet movie that Benoit Blanc is in, but it'll feel like a Muppet movie.”

Knives Out boasted an all star cast, with the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Plummer appearing alongside relative newcomers such as Ana de Armas and Jaeden Martell. Glass Onion has its own fair share of talent thanks to the likes of Ed Norton, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista turning out for the sequel, but it also included some surprise cameos from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury, and Natasha Lyonne, who all played themselves in an unexpected Among Us moment.

So with celebrities playing themselves in Glass Onion, and The Muppets being considered as being in the “real world.” Is a crossover with Knives Out as strange as it sounds? Possibly not. The Happytime Murders attempted to bring puppets into the mature whodunit genre in 2018, under the direction of Brian Henson, but the movie did get great reviews as it delivered something rude, crude and everything that Glass Onion isn’t.

Arguably, the best Muppet crossover was 1992’s The Muppet Christmas Carol, a take on the Dickens story that is not only one of the greatest Muppet products but also one of the best iterations of the classic an much overdone story. What made that movie work is it was taken seriously, especially by Michael Caine in the role of Scrooge, who played the character as though he was working with thespian actors rather than a ragtag bunch of lively puppets.

If Daniel Craig was to play Benoit Blanc in his usual way, and allowing the Muppets to simply play out the story around him and the rest of the cast as a completely straight murder mystery, could potentially be a very interesting prospect. However, it looks like for now, Knives Out 3 will be sticking to a human cast, and fans of the franchise are now eagerly awaiting Blanc’s next mystery.
