Superheroes fill our lives with hope as they fight crime and stop evil from taking over. Whether it's the Avengers or the X-Men, we all love seeing the good fight against evil. While it's easy to suspend disbelief and just enjoy the action, some realities may set in, begging the question of how much it actually costs to be a superhero. From the fancy weapons and costumes to the training involved in keeping the heroes in tip-top shape, being a superhero is not cheap.

Updated July 8, 2023: If you love superheroes, you'll be happy to know we've updated this list with additional content and entries about the richest of them all, as well as new details regarding these various heroes' upcoming film appearances.

While it may not be the first thought to cross everyone’s mind, some often find themselves wondering how much money these heroes have. While some, like Spider-Man, have to suffer the struggles and hardships of financial difficulties, the struggles of heroes are often not financial, leaving us to wonder how much money some of these heroes have. As such, here's a look at the richest superheroes in movie history.

15 Steve Rogers / Captain America

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers in costume in Captain America: The Winter Solider
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

It’s weird to see Steve Rogers aka Captain America on this list, right? Wrong. You see, Steve Rogers really had the rank of Captain by the time he got frozen saving the world during World War II. It turns out Reddit took notice of this little fact, and asked if Cap was eligible for back pay after turning up alive 70 years later. Army spokesperson Wayne Hall obliged with an answer by crunching a few numbers.

The Benefits of an Army Pension

It turns out that for Army pension beneficiaries, there is a biannual increase in pay for every year of service which is adjusted for inflation. As soon as Steve Rogers was defrosted, he went back again to active duty, receiving a hefty sum of $7 million, and while Steve is not one to flaunt his wealth, it’s safe to say he’s set for life given the austerity in which he lives.

When we meet Dr. Stephen Strange, he’s a highly skilled and renowned neurosurgeon who is highly sought-after for his skills while catering to wealthy patients, which allows him to earn a substantial income.

Neurosurgery and Mysticism

Until the fated accident that destroyed his hands, Stephen’s expertise and reputation in the medical field gave him access to a lavish lifestyle and unlimited access to the best high-end medical equipment. While the film states he spends most of his resources trying to mend his damaged hands, it also implies that following his journey into the mystical arts, he’s still well off to have to worry about earning a living.

12 Lamont Cranston / The Shadow

Alec Baldwin as Lamont Cranston pointing guns off camera in The Shadow
Universal Pictures

Very little is known about Lamont Cranston, the secret identity of the superhero The Shadow, but he was already very wealthy before becoming a masked vigilante. As a playboy and philanthropist, he traveled the world seeking knowledge and looking for excitement. His vain superficiality was impacted after meeting the Keepers of the Temple of Cobras. The monks taught him the art of hypnotism and deception.

A Reformed Hero

Lamont first uses his newfound abilities to gain more wealth and power, eventually becoming a warlord named Yin-Ko, who is captured by agents of the mysterious holy man Tulku to be reformed. Once he learns the error of his ways, he uses his immense wealth and power to become an agent of good in New York City, where Shiwan Khan, a descendant of Genghis Khan, plans to destroy the city with a nuclear bomb.

11 Britt Reid / The Green Hornet

Seth Rogen as Britt Reid and Jay Chou as Kato in The Green Hornet (2011)
Sony Pictures Releasing

Britt Reid aka The Green Hornet is the heir to the Reid family fortune. His father owned a successful newspaper and, in many incarnations, he is the descendant of The Lone Ranger, who himself had a secret silver mine. Like Batman and Iron Man, Reid is a rich man with no superpowers who uses his vast wealth to invest in high-tech gadgets. While Reid is rich, he certainly does not have the wealth and resources of characters like Iron Man and Batman, and his adventures tend to be lower in scale than other rich superheroes.

Modest Wealth in Comparison

There is an argument to be made that the main source of his wealth, his newspaper, is struggling in today's climate, but there is still no doubt that Green Hornet is better off than many others. The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannel is set to direct a new Green Hornet movie for Universal, which may address these questions.

Kingo has his own private plane and all the wealth associated with being a movie star.

9 Emma Frost / The White Queen

January Jones as Emma Frost cutting through glass in X-Men: First Class
20th Century Fox

This may come as a surprise to some, but Emma Frost is exceedingly wealthy. Unlike Professor X, Frost earned her wealth by using her powers on men at the Hellfire Club to trick them into paying her more. On top of this, Emma Frost earns even more money now as the CEO of Frost International. Frost has come a long way from at one time being homeless and an exotic dancer to now being one of the few billionaires in Marvel.

A Prominent Member of the Hellfire Club

This supervillain turned X-Men ally has used her wealth to aid in the funding of the X-Men alongside Professor X. Though Emma Frost has only been seen in X-Men: First Class (so far), it was abundantly clear that she was indeed very wealthy and well-connected due to her involvement in the Hellfire Club. The extent of her wealth was never disclosed, but it is safe to say she is one of many rich mutants in the Fox X-Men franchise.

8 Warren Worthington III / Angel

Ben Hardy as Angel ready for battle in X-Men: Apocalypse
20th Century Fox

X-Men: The Last Stand might have been one of the lesser films from the franchise, but Ben Foster's powerful turn as Warren Worthington III — AKA "Angel" — is reason enough alone to see this superhero flick. And, of course, Ben Hardy portrayed a younger version of the fan-favorite in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse. A founding member of the X-Men in the original comics, Worthington originally possessed a pair of large feathered wings extending from his back, enabling him to fly.

The Strongest X-Men Characters in the Franchise's Movie History
The recent trailer for Doctor Strange 2 seems to have brought Professor X, and thus the X-Men, into the MCU fold. Here are the strongest mutants.

Heir to the Worthington Fortune

He is the heir of the Worthington family fortune, and this privileged background results in Warren being stereotyped as self-absorbed and unable to deal with hardships during his early years with the X-Men. It's fun, then, to see his character evolve as the comics progressed, especially in the 1980s when he took on a more intense, humanistic persona despite his outrageous wealth. In some incarnations, Angel helps fund the X-Men or various other superhero groups. In the film continuity, his father owns a large pharmaceutical company, so the character is quite rich.

7 Charles Francis Xavier / Professor X

Patrick Stewart as Professor X in X2
20th Century Fox

Not only is Professor X one of the most powerful members of the X-Men and their designated leader, but he is also an extremely wealthy man. Like Bruce Wayne, Professor X’s wealth was mostly inherited from his stepfather. Professor X is responsible for funding the exploits of the X-Men as well as funding his school, Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. This includes everything from housing young mutants who are students of the school to paying for the expensive gadgets and machinery used by the X-Men to aid them in their missions.

The Financial Backing Behind the X-Men

While he is the main financial backer of the X-Men, he is not the sole contributor, with some funds coming from Magneto and Emma Frost. Interestingly, none of the X-Men movies dive deeply into just how wealthy Professor X is, yet X-Men: First Class does feature a cutting comment from Magneto contrasting the life of privilege Xavier had as opposed to Erik's tragic holocaust childhood.

6 Adrian Veidt / Ozymandias

Matthew Goode as Ozymandias in Watchmen
Warner Bros. Pictures

Adrian Veidt is the superhero widely known as Ozymandias in the Watchmen universe, depicted by Matthew Goode in Zack Snyder's Watchmen. The single heir of the Veidt fortune, Adrian, gave away all his money to build his empire back on his own. A perpetual admirer of the feats of Alexander the Great, Adrian is a practical man who knows pretty well the meaning of risk and venture capital in the business world. As a self-made billionaire, he’s the private owner of Veidt Industries and holds the rights and patents to multiple products used in everyday life in his world.

A Hero Turned Into a Brand

As we met him in 1986, his net worth back in the day was $7 billion, which, adjusted for inflation, would place him right next to Elon Musk these days. Unlike Tony Stark or Bruce Wayne, Adrian never loses sight of a good business opportunity, and he has his hand in multiple industries and his own personal brand as a hero, which spans toys, video games, and any form of paraphernalia you can imagine.

5 Reed Richards / Mr. Fantastic

Still of Krasinski as Reed Richards in the MCU
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The incredibly intelligent Reed Richards AKA Mr. Fantastic is not only the leader of The Fantastic Four, but his genius has managed to gain him a great deal of wealth over the years. Earning his degree at only 20 years old, Reed is responsible for several inventions that earned him a great deal of money. Thanks to his smart investing and the patents on his groundbreaking inventions, Reed managed to accumulate a great deal of wealth which he needed to rent out five whole floors of the Baxter Building in New York City.

The Marvel Knights 4 storyline explores exactly what happens to The Fantastic Four when they lose all their wealth after Reed trusted his funds to the wrong person, and the team is forced to move out of the Baxter Building into a small apartment. However, the team soon reacquired their wealth, and the team continues to use it to help make the world a better place.

The Wealthy Leader of The Fantastic Four

Reed has appeared in many films, including the Tim Story directed films played by Ioan Grufford, the 2015 failed reboot Fantastic Four, played by Miles Teller, and most recently, John Krasinski played a variant version of the character in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The character is set to join the MCU proper in the 2025 film Fantastic Four, yet no actor has been cast yet. So far, only the Tim Story films have shown how rich The Fantastic Four are, but a combination of Reed Richard's inventions and corporate sponsor deals show how well off the superhero team is.

4 Bruce Wayne / Batman

Robert Pattinson as Batman standing in front of an orange sunset in The Batman (2022)
Warner Bros. Pictures

This is an obvious one. Bruce Wayne is the CEO of Wayne Corporation, the biggest industry on the planet, which he inherited from his father. This playboy billionaire can be seen at charity events while he hits the streets as Batman to help put a stop to the criminals running rampant in Gotham. Bruce flaunts his wealth, living in his massive mansion, Wayne Manor, and having a gallery of expensive cars and motorcycles. On top of this, his exploits as an industrialist fund his vigilantism. From crazy gadgets like the Batarang (boomerang) to his ever-coveted Batmobile, which features a remote start, Batman has no shortage of gear.

Bruce Wayne by Day, The Dark Knight by Night

Every movie, from Tim Burton's Batman to Matt Reeves' The Batman, portrays Bruce Wayne's expensive cache of equipment, gadgets, and gear. However, the various film incarnations of the caped crusader seem to be unclear about exactly how rich the Wayne family is and exactly how deep their bank accounts go, although all seem to be deep enough to afford a fully functional Batcave. In the DCEU, Ben Affleck's incarnation of the character bought a whole bank to get Martha Kent back her home, so Batman is certainly not hard up for cash.

3 Tony Stark / Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr. ready to take action in Iron Man.
Marvel Studios

In Iron Man, Tony Stark established himself as an extremely intelligent and wealthy business person before he ever chose to become a superhero. CEO of Stark Industries, and the leading provider of just about everything in the MCU, Tony inherited his position at the company through his father, Howard Stark. Tony continued his father’s legacy by developing the most advanced technology (and shady military weapons).

Iron Man Is Richer Than Bruce Wayne

Eventually, he funded the development of the famous Iron Man suit and the exploits of his group of superheroes, The Avengers. He funds various humanitarian organizations and scholarships, hoping to leave behind a better world. While Tony Stark is not the richest hero in all movie history, his net worth of $12.4 billion is higher than Bruce Wayne’s and one of the highest net worths in movie history.

2 T’Challa / The Black Panther

Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther with his arm raised in Black Panther
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

T’Challa is the ruler of Wakanda and while this is a great responsibility to bear, it is not without its benefits. T’Challa has Vibranium, a rare metal native to Wakanda, to thank for his extreme wealth, as this metal is worth a lot of money at $10,000 a gram. Vibranium has helped with the technological advancement of Wakanda and with an abundance of Vibranium, and an estimated $90 trillion worth of reserves. This works out for Wakanda both financially and technologically. With a whopping net worth of $500 billion, T’Challa from Black Panther is one of the richest superheroes of all time.

Shuri Has Inherited T'Challa's Wealth

With the tragic passing of star Chadwick Boseman being incorporated into the plot of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, this is sadly one superhero audiences will not be seeing again and one who is greatly missed. His wealth, though, has now been passed onto his sister Shuri, the new Black Panther, and will likely play a major role in the MCU moving forward as the sequel sets up various factions coming for Wakanda's Vibranium.

1 Arthur Curry / Aquaman

Jason Mamoa underwater with orange scales and glaring in Aquaman
Warner Bros.

Aquaman may not be making money like Reed Richards is, but he comes from a long line of old money. As ruler of the oceans, Aquaman rules over 70% of the Earth. Along with his royal status, Aquaman has access to millions of shipwrecks all over the ocean, home to billions of dollars worth of treasure, which he can access at any time, along with anything else of value within the ocean. In the first issue of his New 52 comic storyline, Aquaman changes a waitress's life by tipping her gold doubloons he acquired from a sunken pirate ship. Thanks to this, Aquaman is the richest superhero in the DC Universe, greatly surpassing Batman.

Aquaman Owns Most of the Planet

In the DCU, Aquaman first made a cameo appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before his supporting turn in Justice League, followed by his solo film Aquaman. In an odd and fitting twist, Aquaman is the highest-grossing film based on a DC character at the worldwide box office, grossing $1 billion, and a highly anticipated sequel titled Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set for release in December 2023.
