Oscar, Emmy, and Tony-winning actress Rita Moreno has just boarded Fast X in a major role. Taking to Instagram, Fast and Furious franchise star Vin Diesel announced the movie's newest casting in a video of the actor joined by Moreno. In the video, which you can watch below, Diesel reveals that Moreno plays the grandmother of his character, Dominic Toretto. Their co-star Michelle Rodriguez is also standing by to celebrate the casting announcement.

"It's been my dream forever to work with Rita Moreno, and the fact that she's here playing my grandmother makes my soul smile. I am so blessed," Diesel says.

90-year-old Moreno, who's wearing a ballcap that says "So far this is the oldest I've ever been," responds to Diesel, "You know what, I think my old age was waiting for you to invite me. Isn't that nice? And I'm here. And the answer is, yes, I'll do it. And not only do it, I'm tickled, I'm tickled, I'm so thrilled. This is going to be so much fun."

It's not unusual for Diesel to add big stars to the Fast and Furious franchise to play members of his character's family that hadn't been previously introduced. In F9, John Cena showed up as Jakob Toretto, Dom's brother. Diesel had made family an important theme in the Fast series by this point which is also why he made sure Jordana Brewster would also return in Fast X as Mia Toretto, Dom and Jakob's sister.

There will be many big stars joining Fast X to make their debuts in the Fast and Furious movie series. Jason Momoa (Aquaman) will be playing the movie's villain. Diesel has also announced other big names for undisclosed roles, including Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad), and Alan Ritchson (Reacher).

The sequel will also bring back other returning stars from the series. That of course includes Vin Diesel as Dom Toretto. Other cast members that are coming back include Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Cardi B, and Charlize Theron.

One person who isn't back is director Justin Lin, who was planning to helm the final two installments of the series. Shortly after production began, it was announced that Lin had departed the project. There were rumors that this was due to friction with Diesel on the set. In any case, Lin is gone from the project and he was replaced with director Louis Leterrier.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is another Fast and Furious series actor who won't be returning for Fast X. Diesel had offered Johnson the chance to come back for the film, but The Rock turned down the opportunity. He has been open about the fact that he didn't exactly get along with Diesel when working together in the past and Johnson seems to want to leave it be.

Fast X is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on May 19, 2023.
