Moving On premiered in September at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). It follows the relationship between two estranged friends, played by Academy Award Winner Jane Fonda and Academy Award Nominee Lily Tomlin. Aside from Fonda and Tomlin, the cast also includes Malcolm McDowell, and Richard Roundtree. In the US, the film is distributed by Roadside Attractions, which confirmed that the film will be released on March 17, 2023.

The film centers on two old friends reconnecting at a funeral and deciding to take revenge on the widower who had taken advantage of them many years earlier. Aside from the lead roles in Moving On, Fonda and Tomlin will star in Eighty for Brady, which will be released on February 3, 2023. Additionally, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have concluded their Netflix comedy series Grace and Frankie after seven seasons, which is the longest run for any Netflix series ever.

In 2015, Paul Weitz and Lily Tomlin worked together on the award-winning road trip comedy Grandma. Weitz's previous work includes writing and directing About a Boy, which earned him both a BAFTA and an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Additionally, Weitz wrote the 1998 animated film Antz and helmed the 1999 film American Pie. Joining Paul Weitz in the role of producer are Andrew Miano, Stephanie Meurer, Chris Parker, and Dylan Sellers. Zach Schiller David Boies, Tyler Zacharia, Dan Balgoyen, and Britta Rowings are executive producers of the project.

Though Moving On was acquired by Roadside Attractions, Weitz stated his confidence that the company would deliver the film well. He also expressed he can't wait for people to see how beautiful and unique Jane and Lily are. The acquisition was conducted by Howard Cohen, Roadside Attractions' co-president and UTA Independent Group on behalf of the filmmakers. According to Cohen, the movie is an original comedy infused with humor and heart:

“We couldn’t resist this smart comedy with the beloved Jane and Lily pairing up in a way you’ve never seen them before. They are best friends pulling off a crazy but intense caper that resonates with both their lives.”

The film is produced by Andrew Miano, Stephanie Meurer, Paul Weitz, Chris Parker and Dylan Sellers. Zach Schiller David Boies, Tyler Zacharia, Dan Balgoyen and Britta Rowings serve as executive producers. “Moving On” was fully financed by Limelight and Bois/Schiller Entertainment.
