According to Variety, Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep are circling First Man for Disney. The pic was scripted by Diane English, who will make her feature directing debut on the pic, being eyed for a 2006 production start.

De Niro would play a Ted Turner-like mogul who puts his career on hold to run a presidential campaign for his wife. When she becomes the first woman to occupy the White House, he's suddenly faced with a significant role reversal.

The dealmaking is expected to begin shortly, following both thesps taking part in a reading of the script last week at the Tribeca Film Center, with an assist from Cynthia Nixon, Kieran Culkin, Bill Irwin, Jeremy Piven and Sarah Paulsen.

The big obstacle now is scheduling. Streep has a number of movies lined up, including The Devil Wears Prada and Prairie Home Companion, while De Niro is preparing to direct The Good Shepherd.

DeNiro and Streep previously worked together on The Deer Hunter, Falling in Love and Marvin's Room.
