Robert Downey Jr. will star in Yucatan, while Sherlock Holmes screenwriter Anthony Peckham has been hired by Warner Bros. to write the script, according to Deadline New York.

We first reported on the project back in June, when Robert Downey Jr. and his wife, Susan Downey were boarding the project as producers. It was said, at the time, that Robert Downey Jr. was considering starring in the movie. Now it seems he will play the lead, a deep sea salvage specialist who is hired to steal hidden Mayan treasure buried underwater in the ruins of Yucatan.

The project is based on the long lost notebooks of actor Steve McQueen, which were discovered by his son, Chad McQueen, in 2005. The actor had compiled 1,500 pages of notes and storyboards detailing this story, which he apparently first wrote in the 1960s and never got to start before his death in 1980.

No production schedule was released for Yucatan.
