A new RoboCop video game is in the works and a gameplay trailer reveals that original star Peter Weller is reprising the role. Developed by Nacon, RoboCop: Rogue City is heading to PC and consoles next year, as previously announced. The all-new gameplay trailer provides a sneak peek at what the game looks like along with the debut of Weller's digital version of RoboCop as seen in the title.
"The triumphant return of RoboCop wouldn’t feel right without the man who brought so much life into the role, and we’re excited to reveal that Peter Weller will be performing voiceover work on the game. "We're delighted to be teaming up with MGM to offer a new vision of a popular franchise that was created over 30 years ago," Nacon CEO Alain Falc said when the game was announced. "This game is the perfect fit to pursue our aim of offering different gaming experiences to the widest possible audience."
MGM's Robert Marick, Executive Vice President Global Consumer Products and Experiences, added: "We're very much looking forward to collaborating with Nacon and Teyon to bring one of MGM's most timeless I.P.'s back to gaming platforms with a brand-new story. The film is known for gripping action and complex storytelling, and we are excited for RoboCop fans to experience this first hand through the game."
The official synopsis for RoboCop: Rogue City reads:
"Welcome to Detroit; crime runs rampant as the city lies on the edge of ruin, people fighting for scraps as others live extravagant lives of luxury. Control of the Detroit Police Department is given to the Omni Consumer Products corporation in an attempt to restore order. You are that solution, RoboCop, a cyborg tasked with protecting the city."
RoboCop: Rogue City Brings Back Peter Weller
A variety of video games have been developed based on RoboCop dating back to the 1980s, but very few have arrived over the past two decades. The most recent version was a mobile game released in 2014 that served as a tie-in to that year's remake. Before that, a separate RoboCop game was also released on mobile devices in 2004, this one based on the original movie. A different version was released on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 2 the prior year.
While RoboCop's solo video games have been limited lately, he did make his mark in the Mortal Kombat franchise by becoming a playable fighter in Mortal Kombat 11. This version was modeled after the one from the original movie and featured Peter Weller voicing the role, as he does in his new game RoboCop: Rogue City.
RoboCop: Rogue City will be released in 2003 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. An exact release date has yet to be determined.
