The Rogue One Prequel TV series will begin production this fall. Star Wars, throughout most of its long history, has been primarily associated with the big screen. However, Disney is finally looking to expand the franchise with some live-action offerings on the small screen. First up will be The Mandalorian, which is currently in production, but we learned in November of last year that Diego Luna will be back to reprise his role as Cassian Andor in a series that will take place prior to the events of Rogue One, and now we know when filming will get underway.

According to a new report, the currently untitled Rogue One spin-off series will kick off production in October 2019. For the time being, there is no word on where filming will take place, nor do we know just yet who is going to be heading up the series. But that gives Lucasfilm 10 months to put the necessary pieces together behind the scenes. It also means the show would likely be ready in time for a fall 2020 debut.

This new series will be produced for the upcoming Disney streaming service, Disney+, which is set to launch later this year. The company has not yet announced a specific launch date, but it's expected to arrive sometime in the fall. Star Wars is going to have a very big presence on the service, with The Mandalorian also being produced as an exclusive for Disney+. That series is being executive produced by Jon Favreau and will take place in the time between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Disney+ will also be home to the final season of The Clone Wars animated series.

While many details about this new series are being kept under wraps, we know that Cassian Andor has been part of the Rebellion for years, long before they were a legitimate force to be reckoned with. Even in Rogue One, we saw some of the seedier sides of the Rebellion through his eyes and we'll likely be exploring more of those shades of grey in this new show. At the present time, it hasn't been confirmed if any other characters, such as K-2SO, will be returning alongside Diego Luna for the series.

Rogue One was the first standalone Star Wars live-action movie to take place outside of the episodic saga and showed us how the Rebels managed to get their hands on the Death Star plans. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the movie grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, making it a huge success. While there are near countless characters and corners of the galaxy that could be explored in a live-action Star Wars TV series, this does seem like a logical one for Lucasfilm. And if this and The Mandalorian are both successful, we could be seeing more shows pop up in the future. We'll be sure to keep you up to date as any additional details on the series are made available. This news was first reported by the Production Weekly Twitter account.
