Back in May, details first surfaced from a Star Wars book that revealed there will be a new ship called the U-Wing in the highly-anticipated spinoff Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Last month, we got even more details about this ship through a new activity book, but we still hadn't gotten our first glimpse at this ship, until now. While we don't know exactly when we'll get to see this ship in action with new footage, we have some details from LucasFilm Story Group's Matt Martin.
Matt Martin stopped by StarWars.com's The Star Wars Show today, where he showcased the first look at this ship. In this video, Matt Martin teases that the U-Wing was also included in concept art seen during last year's Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim. Here's what he had to say about this latest addition to the Star Wars fleet.
"The U-Wing is a new ship in the Star Wars universe. It is a troop transport and gunship, so it's there to bring in Rebel troops to heavy fire zones and to get our as quickly as possible. The wings move, depending on the situation. It's there to both drop off troops and provide air support."
These details essentially confirm the earlier report, which described the ship as a "sturdy troop transport and gunship". We also see in the video below that the wings do in fact move to several different positions, depending on the scenario, and we learn that the ship's official title is INCOM UT-60D. Our earlier report described U-Wing pilots as "brave and daring, but must also exercise caution to protect the lives of soldiers aboard, and safely deliver them to carry out crucial missions." We don't know for sure if any of the primary characters will be flying a U-Wing in Rogue One, but we'll keep you posted with new details as they come in. We also have a number of photos from this video, which you can check out below.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first of LucasFilm's spinoffs, with this story taking place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. The story follows a group of Rebels trying to retrieve the plans for the original Death Star. This group of new heroes is being lead by Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), who has been rumored to be the mother of Rey (Daisy Ridley). While we wait for more details on Rogue One, take a look at this week's episode of The Star Wars Show, and you can skip ahead to the 1:24 mark for the U-Wing segment, along with the new photos below.
