Yesterday, a new report revealed Disney and LucasFilm's casting short list for their second Star Wars spinoff Han Solo. The studio has already set a May 25, 2018 release date, with production scheduled to begin in January 2017. Buried within Variety's report is an intriguing yet unconfirmed detail, which claims that whoever lands the Han Solo role will also make an appearance in this year's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

The report claims there is still one month left of principal photography on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and that Han Solo may have a small cameo in this spinoff, before moving on to the Han Solo standalone. Both Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the Han Solo spinoff take place in the waning years between Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan confirmed earlier this month that Star Wars Anthology: Han Solo will be set 10 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

Star Wars Anthology: Han Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will reportedly make their final decision on the new Han Solo within the next two weeks. The top contenders for this iconic role are Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Jack Reynor, Scott Eastwood, Logan Lerman, Emory Cohen and Blake Jenner. Last month, a report revealed that the studio had tested over 2,500 actors for the iconic role, with others such as Chandler Riggs, Rami Malek, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nick Robinson, Leo Howard, Tony Oller, Landon Liboiron, Ed Westwick, Tom Felton, Joshua Sasse, Colton Haynes and Max Thieriot also trying out.

The Star Wars Anthology: Han Solo spinoff will focus on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley. Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie) are directing from a script co-written by Lawrence Kasdan (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and his son Jon Kasdan (In the Land of Women). The May 25, 2018 release date will mark exactly the 41st Anniversary of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope's release on May 25, 1977.

This Han Solo cameo in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has not been confirmed, but Disney seems to be taking a page out of Marvel's playbook, if this turns out to be true. After Marvel finally secured the rights to Spider-Man from Sony, it was confirmed that this iconic character will first appear in an MCU movie, Captain America: Civil War, before the Spider-Man reboot hits theaters in the summer of 2017.
