Romy and Michele's High School Reunion 2 is not outside the realm of possibility as both lead stars of the 1997 comedy would be up for a new film. Written by Robin Schiff and directed by David Mirkin, the original film stars Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow as a pair of 28-year-old women who decide to invent fake careers to impress their former classmates at a ten-year high school class reunion. Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, and Julia Campbell also starred.

At the SAG Awards, Sorvino and Kudrow reunited to present an award during the ceremony. Fan of the film were happy to see the two channeling Romy and Michele for the special appearance and it had some wondering if a new film with these characters could be in the cards. It's not up to Sorvino and Kudrow, but if Romy and Michele's High School Reunion 2 were to get put on track, both actresses would be happy to return. This is according to Sorvino, who said as much in a recent chat with Extra.

"For me, that's always been a hope and a wish. I saw lots of people asking for it. So, Disney, here's your sign from the sky! People have a hunger for it, and we'd love to do it."

Sorvino also explained what led to going all-in with the Romy and Michele reunion at the SAG Awards with Kudrow, which even saw them referencing the film by pulling out Post-it notes on the stage.

"We were asked to present together and they thought it would be nice to have a little homage to Romy and Michele. And then we decided to coordinate outfit, and it all kind of kept snowballing. It was even my husband's idea to do the Post-its. He's like, 'You know what would be great, is if when you're announcing the names, you have Post-its.' I called my publicist like, 'Can you find some Post-its?'"

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion Had a Prequel

Romy
ABC Family

There has been a follow-up film in the past, but it was as a made-for-TV movie with a different cast. Serving as a prequel and following the titular friends in high school, ABC Family released Romy and Michele: In the Beginning in 2005. It stars Katherine Heigl a Romy and Alexandra Breckenridge as Michele, and while it has a new cast, it's written and directed by Romy and Michele's High School Reunion writer Robin Schiff.

As a prequel featuring young versions of the characters, In the Beginning isn't quite the sequel many fans had been hoping for. Some would prefer to see Sorvino and Kudrow reprising the roles for another installment. Perhaps a new film could pick up with Romy and Michele reuniting with their old classmates once again, this time for their 35th reunion. It would just take some creativity to come up with a new story that would work just as well for the characters, as their former classmates will be wise to them this time around concerning the fake careers.
