Director Ron Howard and writer/producer Akiva Goldsman will reunite once again for a new HBO Western project which revolves around famed gunslinger Doc Holliday. The project will be the first under a new two-year deal Akiva Goldsman signed with HBO.

Adam Cooper and Bill Collage (Accepted, Tower Heist) will write the pilot script, and will executive produce alongside Akiva Goldsman and Kerry Foster. Ron Howard is attached to direct the pilot episode.

The project is based off Mary Doria Russell's novel Doc, which paints Doc Holliday in a much different light. He is best known as the sidekick and best friend of Wyatt Earp, although this untitled series will feature Doc Holliday as the main protagonist, an educated Southerner who was a dentist before gaining notoriety as a gunslinger. The series will also showcase the love triangle between Doc Holliday, his wife, Kate Elder, and Wyatt Earp.

It is said the project was initially conceived as a mini-series, before HBO suggested turning it into a full series.
