We reported back in September that Warner Bros. was moving forward on a remake of the 1976 film A Star Is Born and it seems they have zeroed in on a leading man. The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Russell Crowe has become the studio's top candidate to star in the remake.

Our initial report cited that Beyonce was circling the project and this new story from the Times indicates that, while Beyonce hasn't officially signed on, her interest in the project has grown and still could star. While an offer hasn't gone out to Crowe yet, it was said that the actor was very interested in starring in the film. It was said that Sean Penn and Robert Downey Jr. were also considered by the studio.

The story, written by Will Fetters, will center on a former music legend-turned-alcoholic, who begins to mentor a young female singer, who he then starts falling for. It was also reported that director Nick Cassavettes has entered into negotiations to direct the film.
