Star Willow Smith and her producer/dad Will Smith had originally wanted Eat, Pray, Love director and Glee creator Ryan Murphy to /annie-wants-ryan-murphy-to-direct/direct their big screen reboot of the classic musical Annie, which is itself based on a comic strip. That is no longer happening.

Ryan Murphy has dropped out of contention to direct, with no reason given at this time. The director simply broke away from the project with no comment. It is unclear if there was a problem between the producers and Ryan Murphy, but his decision to leave may have been over creative differences and the direction this new Annie was headed.

Annie is set up at Sony Pictures through Overbrook Entertainment as the first project in a joint venture between Jay-Z and partners James Lassiter, Ken Stovitz, Will Smith, and his wife, Willow's mother, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Jay-Z found success with 1998's Hard Knock Life single, which incorporated samples from the original Annie soundtrack from 1982. The upcoming reboot will retain element from that music video.
