Revisiting the 80s for more creative inspiration, the creators of Cobra Kai are actively developing a spinoff of the classic comedy Ferris Bueller's Day Off. As previously reported, the project is in the works at Paramount Pictures with Bill Posley (Welcome to Flatch) on board to write the script. Called Sam and Victor's Day Off, the film will focus on the parking attendants who take out the Ferrari from the first film for a drive around town, revealing how exactly they racked up the miles on the odometer.

Producing Sam and Victor's Day Off under their Counterbalance Entertainment banner are Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald. In a new interview with Deadline, Hurwitz commented on the Ferris Bueller spinoff and how excited they are to take it on.

"As for the Ferris Bueller project, we are so excited about that project which we’re producing. We have a great writer, Bill Posley, who’s worked on Cobra Kai with us, who we love and he has an awesome take on it. It’s exciting to dip into the John Hughes universe, but see a side of that world that we haven’t seen with these characters, Sam and Victor, who were the valets in the original Ferris Bueller movie. The three of us are suckers for side characters in general and love to see what’s going on in their worlds, so that’s going to be a fun one when we get to it."

As excited as they are to work on the film, there are some other projects that must first take priority. That includes fleshing out their plans for a sixth season of Cobra Kai as well as their upcoming action-comedy series Obliterated, a Netflix Original following an elite special forces team thwarting a deadly threat to Las Vegas. Only once these goals are reached will they get moving on Sam and Victor's Day Off.

"But that will not impact any Cobra Kai going forward. It’s really about working on Obliterated, getting through our production there, and then figuring out the path for more Cobra Kai.”

Written and directed by the late John Hughes, Ferris Bueller's Day Off was released in 1986. The comedy follows Matthew Broderick as the titular teenager who decides to skip school for the day along with two pals for some fun in Chicago. A big hit at the box office that's highly regarded as one of the greatest comedies of the 80s, the film also featured Mia Sara, Alan Ruck, Jennifer Grey, Charlie Sheen, Ben Stein, and Louie Anderson.

Despite the film's success, no official sequel would ever materialize. There was a TV series adaptation that was attempted on NBC in 1990 starring Charlie Schlatter and Jennifer Aniston, but it was not long for the world as it was canceled after 13 episodes. Perhaps recreating the magic of Ferris Bueller's day off is not possible, so maybe the Cobra Kai team is onto something by instead focusing on completely different characters taking their own day off, that just so happens to be on the very same day as that original film.

Sam and Victor's Day Off does not have a premiere date at this time.
