A married woman leaves her husband for a lover who disappears after the murder of a young girl in The Stranger in Our Bed, starring Emily Berrington, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, and Samantha Bond. The romantic thriller is based on the novel by Samantha Lee Howe, who also wrote the screenplay.

According to Bond, the movie is “very true,” to the book. “Samantha Lee Howe did a brilliant job of the adaptation of her own book. When you’re making it, it gets quite technical, and I was really amazed by how full of suspense it is. It’s frightening. I think it's been beautifully shot, and I think that Giles Alderson, as the director, has done an amazing job… it looks so classy, and has lovely performances,” said Bond.

Bond can be recognized for a number of notable films including Tomorrow Never Dies, Die Another Day, GoldenEye, The World Is Not Enough, and more. Also in the cast are Nina Wadia, Joseph Marcell, Terri Dwyer, Bart Edwards, Andi Osho, Paul Casar, and more. It was released theatrically on August 26, 2022.

Emily Berrington, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, and Cast in The Stranger in Our Bed

Bond plays Isadora in The Stranger in Our Bed, the mother of Tom (Lloyd-Hughes). “The film is about a married couple, and you know within minutes that something isn’t quite right,” explained Bond, “I play the mother of the husband. And I think an interesting thing to say is that almost everyone in the film has their secrets, and Isadora is no exception to that.”

“Emily Berrington and Ben Lloyd-Hughes play the troubled couple… and in real life, they’re a happily married couple with a small baby,” continued Bond, “they were absolutely delightful. And then amazing things like getting an actor of Joseph Marcell’s status to play the chauffeur, who is obviously more than a chauffeur and knows a lot of secrets, as does Nina Wadia, the housekeeper for many, many years and has witnessed all sorts of things. The cast was absolutely phenomenal.”

Among the talented cast was actually Bond’s husband for a scene, mirroring the real-life relations of her co-stars. She recalled her agent asking, “What are you going to do about the bed scene?” because one of Isadora’s secrets “is her past that involved a bed scene.” In response, Bond asked her husband to take part, which proved tricky as they filmed during heightened pandemic regulations, though were able to make it work. “It was really sweet because we got to go away to North Hampton, at a time we had been with each other within four walls for a year. And just to be in a different fall, it was lovely,” said Bond.

“For some reason, I’ve reached this stage in my life where I keep being sent horror films. Some of them are brilliant, and some of them aren’t. And I thought in terms of a thriller, she’s [Howe] done a beautiful job,” commented Bond on what it was that made her want to film this movie, even at a time during the pandemic when things may have appeared uncertain.

“We were in lockdown, so the entire crew was masked. The actors were masked until they went on camera. We lateral flowed every morning, which is terribly funny because it gets lined up in a column, and they looked like a whole line of pregnancy tests,” laughed Bond, “but it was great. I have to say, though, that I don’t know if I would recognize Giles again,” she joked, referring to how she was only able to see his forward as his mask covered the rest of his face.

“I think it’s a gripping story,” added Bond, “it’s really interesting when you watch it because I wouldn’t say it is fast-paced, but your heart is really pounding because you don’t know where the line is going. It’s an ingenious story.”

The Stranger in Our Bed is a production of Buffalo Dragon and is available now on demand on Showtime.
