Samuel L. Jackson has a busy schedule coming up in the MCU’s future as the lead in Secret Invasion on Disney+ and as part of The Marvels. As the only star of the franchise to have been around since Iron Man kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2008, Jackson’s portrayal of Nick Fury has been ever-present in the comic book saga, but it has taken until now to become a central character. While it was first believed that Secret Invasion would arrive on Disney+ this year, Jackson’s latest update on filming has suggested the show will not land until early 2023. That timeline could also help explain why Marvel Studios and Disney decided to swap the releases of Quantumania and The Marvels.

Secret Invasion will be the first MCU project to be partly set during the Blip when half of the world – including Fury — were dusted. There has been a lot of speculation as to how this will impact Fury’s appearance in the series, including questions of whether Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) will take on Fury’s form for the main part of the story, as we know he does this during the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home. It is also now suspected that the series will explain why Fury was off-world in the post-credit credit scene of Tom Holland’s second Spider-Man movie, and that will lead directly into The Marvels.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Jackson was able to give a small update, and it seems like there is still a little way to go until filming is complete on either project. After playing with Kimmel and acting shocked to learn that he was about to star in a Disney+ show, Jackson said:

"No. I'm not done. I am on my way back to London at some point in August. But I got to go back and do stuff for The Marvels and then I got to do stuff for Secret Invasion."

While Samuel L. Jackson has confirmed that he be back in front of the camera in a few months for both of his upcoming projects, it is probable that his return to London will be for reshoots. While it has not been confirmed that the plots of Secret Invasion and The Marvels are interlinked, there are a lot of threads connecting the two projects, including the shift of release date for The Marvels.

Thanks to many connections between various Marvel Studios releases, the actual schedule for both movies and shows to make their debut’s has always been something that is plotted as far in advance as the storylines. However, the numerous delays from Covid and the effect that has still been having on some productions have meant that there have needed to be a few changes to the Marvel Studios slate. From what is known, Secret Invasion will impact The Marvels, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has links to the multiverse and Loki but no imminent future projects. With Secret Invasion probably not arriving until February or March 2023, The Marvels' current release date of July 2023 sits much better than its previous March release.
