If there was to be a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer there is one person who would get the vote of series star Sarah Michelle Gellar. As the actress who played Buffy Summers across seven seasons of the show, as well as in select crossover episodes of the spin-off series Angel, Gellar is probably the one person who would know exactly who could carry on the Buffy torch if the show was to make a return to screens. Since the final episode aired in 2003, there have been numerous attempts to revive and reboot the show, but even though talks have been ongoing as recently as 2020, it just hasn’t happened yet.

However, with streaming platforms looking for new and exclusive content, it would not be surprising if talks of a new Buffy series begin to pick up speed again, and while being interviewed for the new book Into Every Generation A Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts, Gellar said that she was in full support of a reboot, as the whole mythology of the Slayer was that there was a new one in each generation. When it comes to deciding who should play the role, Gellar said, “I vote Zendaya.”

There is obviously a lot of love for Zendaya at the moment, having appeared for a third time as MJ in Spider-Man: No Way Home, taking a role in Dune and its upcoming sequel, and having gained a lot of praise for her return in the second season of Euphoria. As well as getting a glowing recommendation for the Buffy role, which was echoed in the book by Gellar’s co-star Julie Benz, Zendaya’s name has been attached to roles in a Kill Bill Sequel, Marvel spin-offs, and many more, and it is more a question of which parts she chooses to take on rather than which she may be offered if and when they come up.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Is A Series That Actually Set Itself Up For a Reboot Rather Than A Revival

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Cast Reunite, Is a TV Revival Happening?

In a time when remakes and reboots are everywhere, and a lot of nostalgic shows and movies are coming back with original cast involvement, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is now celebrating its 25th anniversary, and that means there is a whole generation who probably don’t know much about the character. While there are older fans who would be happy to see Gellar and her former co-stars coming back together for a Buffy reunion, the series was actually one of the few that ended with the idea that if it did return, the cast and the lead in particular would be different.

The foundation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer dictated that, as the book title says, every generation has a new Slayer, and in that the show almost sets up a Doctor Who style of renewal clause, where the title character could in effect be changed at any time, although it would require a small adjustment to the title itself. However, the name of Buffy is one of the big identifiers to the series, so perhaps the name would need to stay but with a new face behind it. Whether we will see a new version of Buffy arriving soon is something that is currently unknown, but if it did arrive, the role of the new Slayer would certainly be one that would be hotly contested by some of today’s biggest stars.
