Scarlett Johansson was a key piece of the first phases of the MCU, although it took her character more than 10 years to get her own movie. Black Widow was part of the original Avengers team, and even when she didn’t make it in the end and now the franchise is ready to introduce a new group of heroes, fans are still expecting her return. But it might never happen.

While speaking with Gwyneth Paltrow on her podcast, The Goop, the actresses spoke about their experiences within Marvel Studios and the chances of their characters coming back, and Johansson seemed pretty cleared about what’s next for Natasha Romanoff:

“I’m done. Chapter is over. I did all that I had to do. Also coming back and playing a character again and again, over a decade of time, is such a unique experience.”

Paltrow also addressed the possibility of her returning as Pepper Potts, after her co-star told her the company is definitely keeping her:

“Really? A 64-year-old Pepper Potts? How great.”

With the recent introduction of the multiverse and different realities, the idea of late characters appearing once again or actors playing a different version of them seems very likely. In fact, rumors of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans returning as Iron Man and Captain America have been around for a while, but this doesn’t mean all of them have to come back.

Johansson and Paltrow worked together in Iron Man 2, with many rumors surrounding the film about Johansson not getting along with the rest of the cast, something they also talked about in the podcast:

.“You were so nice to me on that movie. I was so petrified. You were so nice to me! You could’ve been awful. I was so out of my comfort zone on that movie. I’d never done anything like that before. Plus, you had established such deep friendships.”

The actresses were some of the first and very few women in the MCU back then, something that has definitely changed over time. Now, many of the main characters like Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch or even young ones like Cassie Lang have taken over the franchise.

In fact, if a Young Avengers movie ever gets made, most of the main heroes will actually be girls, which is an interesting change from the original Avengers line up.
