For a long while, it seemed that a sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider would be happening at some point, but it seemed that the Alicia Vikander-led franchise’s best hopes were all but dashed by the onset of the Covid pandemic and the delays it brought to the entertainment industry. While it seemed that MGM was still planning on pushing ahead with the sequel, in July this year, it was revealed that their window of opportunity had run out and their option on the rights had expired. Now some newly released storyboards from the lost sequel have revealed a small look at one of the movie’s set piece sequences.

Tomb Raider first hit the big screen in the early 2000s, with Angelina Jolie taking on the role of busty school-boy fantasy game character Lara Croft for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its sequel The Cradle of Life. Jumping forward to 2018 and Croft was given a rough, tough make-over just like her in-game appearance. Alicia Vikander gave her all to the part, playing a more realistic version of the character, but that didn’t lead to box office gold or massively impressive critic or audience ratings. However, a sequel was put into development, and while there has been very little revealed about where it could have gone, the new storyboards shared by artist Jake Lunt Davies show a raid on Croft Manor that would have formed part of the film’s plotline. Hollywood is once again falling in love with video game adaptations. There are currently a lot of projects coming to both to theaters and streaming platforms with their origins in video games, which include the likes of Sonic The Hedgehog, Super Mario Bros. and Metal Gear Solid, along with HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, Peacock’s Twisted Metal and the recent Halo and Resident Evil series.

Of course, as Netflix’s Resident Evil proved, there are no guarantees of success no matter how popular a franchise is. With Tomb Raider having had two cracks at the whip and with similar results on both occasions, there will obviously be questions over what could make an adaptation of the game into a bigger success. When the rights were relinquished by MGM, a bidding war was reportedly set in motion, meaning that although the 2018 version of the movie may not be advancing, it is only a matter of time before Lara Croft returns to screens in some way.

Although there will never be a way of knowing how the sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider would have played out, Vikander was always on board with the idea of reprising her role, and before the MGM rights expiration, the actress said: "With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue. Now it's kind of politics. I think Misha [Green] and I have been ready, so it's kind of in somebody else's hands, to be honest. I've been excited to show the world.”
