The stab-happy adventures of Ghostface will continue in the upcoming Scream 6, and while details of the horror sequel remain largely unknown, some semblance of the plot has now been unveiled. In a report by The Hollywood Reporter, it has now been revealed that Scream 6 “continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.”

While the details are brief, it is likely then that Scream 6 will follow the four confirmed cast members, Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown, as they pack up and leave Woodsboro in the hopes of beginning anew. Sadly, this being a Scream sequel, their hopes and dreams will likely be brought to a swift end.

As Scream fans will know, the franchise has left the California town of Woodsboro before. While the town has become a staple of the series, only the original Scream, Scream 4, and the 2022 offering have taken place in Woodsboro. Notably, whether you’re in Woodsboro or not, living in the Scream universe rarely ends well wherever you are.

Along with these scant details regarding the direction of the follow-up, Scream 6 has also continued to round out its supporting cast, adding Young Guns and Insidious: Chapter 3 star Dermot Mulroney. The new addition will reportedly play a cop in Scream 6, a job that is sure to be incredibly difficult when Ghostface once again kicks off with all the killing.

The beloved Scream franchise returned at the start of this year courtesy of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (known collectively as Radio Silence) and writers by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Starring Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar, alongside Roger L. Jackson, Marley Shelton, Skeet Ulrich, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell, who reprise their roles from previous installments, Scream takes place twenty-five years after the original Woodsboro murders, when yet another Ghostface appears and begins targeting a group of teenagers who are each somehow linked to the original killings.

Scream 6 was officially greenlit back in February, with the creative team behind the fifth Scream outing all set to return and continue the horror legacy. Not only will filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick make a comeback, Scream staple Courteney Cox will also reprise the role of Gale Weathers. Not only that, it has also now been announced that Scream 4 star Hayden Panettiere will bring back another character from Scream’s past, that of Kirby Reed.

Cox has since heaped praise on the script for Scream 6. While trying hard not to give anything away, Cox has said of the script, "I don't know about contracts and where things are, but I'll tell you in the script — it's a really good one. You actually have to be killed if you talk about it, so I'm not gonna say anything."

Scream 6 is scheduled for release on March 31, 2023.
