A new set of images from the filming of the upcoming horror sequel, Scream 6, reveals the return of franchise staple Courteney Cox. Shared by People, the images find Cox reprising the role of Gale Weathers, who will once again face off with the slasher killer known as Ghostface. Rather than fear, she must just be feeling irritation with the constant reappearances of Ghostface by now.

Initially introduced in an antagonistic role in the first Scream way, way back in 1996, Gale Weathers started life as an ambitious, strong-willed journalist and writer. After featuring in every outing in the franchise so far, Gale was last seen in this year’s Scream AKA Scream 5. Now a divorcée morning host who often finds herself discussing and writing about surviving the constant Ghostface attacks, the final moments of Scream sees Gale deciding to pen a tribute to the dearly departed Dewey Riley rather than give the latest killers any notoriety.

Cox has been a staple of the Scream series since the very beginning, and fans will be excited to see her return. Especially considering that her fellow leading character, Sidney Prescott played by Neve Campbell, will not be back for Scream 6. “Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film," Campbell said last month. “As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."

She continued adding, “It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years."

It was recently revealed that Scream 6 will shift the slasher action from the Californian town of Woodsboro to New York City. The sequel will follow several characters introduced in 2022’s Scream, including Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter, Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter, and Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin, as they leave Woodsboro behind and head to the big apple.

Reports have stated that Scream 6 “continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.” Courteney Cox will not be the only legacy character to return for Scream 6, with Scream 4 star Hayden Panettiere set to reprise her role as Kirby Reed.

Panettiere recently revealed that Kirby’s comeback was all her idea, saying, "I called them up myself and was like, 'So, you guys don’t happen to want to bring Kirby back, do you?' I wanted to be in it that badly. I don’t think anyone’s going to be disappointed.”

Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, Scream 6 is set to be released by Paramount Pictures on March 31, 2023.
