One last trailer has just come in for Scream days ahead of its official premiere in theaters. The new film, the fifth installment of the Scream movie series, brings back its legacy cast members who've managed to survive this long to team up with a new group of Ghostface targets to take on the anonymous serial killer. Making it to the end usually depends on abiding by certain horror movie "rules," but as David Arquette's Dewey says in the new trailer, there's something that feels "different" about it this time.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not) directed the new Scream. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick penned the screenplay. Original screenwriter Kevin Williamson executive produced with Chad Villella, Gary Barger, Peter Oillataguerre, Ron Lynch, Cathy Konrad, and Marianne Maddalena.
The official synopsis reads: "Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. Neve Campbell (“Sidney Prescott”), Courteney Cox (“Gale Weathers”) and David Arquette (“Dewey Riley”) return to their iconic roles in Scream alongside Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar."
There has been a particular focus in the marketing of how the killer is "always someone you know." From the very start of the Scream movie series, the identity of Ghostface is revealed to be one or more of the potential victims who were actually carrying out the killing the whole time. One poster for the movie features all of the main cast members and straight up says that "the killer is on this poster." What's interesting is that the legacy cast members are also on the poster, setting up the potential for a very shocking revelation. Your guess is as good as ours who the killer (or killers) will be.
Scream May Be the Start of a New Movie Series
If this new Scream is well-received by fans with a strong enough box office showing, the potential is high for more sequels to be developed. Co-director Tyler Gillett previously mentioned in an interview with Total Film that the new writers have come up with a logical way for a new story to be introduced in the Scream universe. He also teased that there are "more stories to be told in Woodsboro," suggesting that they'd be happy to bring back Ghostface for more carnage if a studio gets the greenlight.
"This new cast of characters is so wonderful," Gillett said. "The legacy cast, they're so wonderful. I think what we discovered, and what [screenwriters] Guy [Busick] and James [Vanderbilt] did, is they found a real reason for the next story to exist. We know that there is more gas in the tank. There are more stories to be told in Woodsboro, and about these characters, for sure."
Scream will make its premiere in movie theaters on Jan. 14, 2022.
