It's the holiday season and the Scream team has gifted horror fans with three all-new images from the upcoming movie. Set to debut on the big screen in January, the fifth installment of the Scream franchise will feature a blend of legacy characters returning to face a new massacre in Woodsboro alongside a plethora of series newcomers. Which one will be the killer, and who will survive? We'll find out next month, but for now, we get another look at the suspects.

One photo shows us Gale Weathers-Riley (Courteney Cox) back on the scene. She appears to be investigating an apparent crime scene, likely after another murder carried out by the new Ghostface. On one hand, Gale is probably pretty terrified to face yet another massacre after survivor four deadly killing sprees in the past. At the same time, she's got a job to do, and perhaps she'll be there to cover the killings as well.

Another picture presents another handful of suspects. Legacy star David Arquette is back as Dewey Riley, and he's seated on a couch with Dylan Minnette's Wes, Jack Quaid's Richie, and Melissa Barrera's Sam. Any one of them could be the killer this time around, and if the history of the series is any indication, chances are multiple characters could be involved. We won't know until the inevitable unmasking scene at the end.

Scream Cast

Before then, the killer (or killers) will be carrying out these bloody killings in the black outfit with the familiar Ghostface mask. Whoever's under the mask, we've seen what theyr'e capable of in the previous teasers and trailers. Odds are most of the others aren't going to make it to the bloody reveal. In any case, another new photo of Ghostface has also been released.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett direct Scream using a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. The sequel stars Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Dylan Minnette, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Kyle Gallner, Sonia Ben Ammar, and Mikey Madison. Roger L. Jackson also reprises his role as the voice of Ghostface alongside returning legacy stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox.

A synopsis for Scream reads: "Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town's deadly past."

"Well, I could tell you that [directors] Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett did an incredible job," David Arquette recently told Variety about the film while avoiding giving out any specific spoilers. He added, "And the writers as well. It’s scary and it’s really funny. They took the world and expanded on it, and it’s got this incredible new cast. That really reminded me of us when we were younger — the way they all got along. And it’s great to see that Woodsboro is more diverse, a reflection of the world we live in."

Scream will be released in movie theaters on Jan. 14, 2022.
