The final moments of recent Marvel outing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings teased the return of the titular Ten Tings, with Shang-Chi’s sister Xu Xialing, played by Meng'er Zhang, taking over the sinister organization. Actress Meng'er Zhang was recently asked whether she would return for the expected Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 2, and while she revealed that she is not privy to any insider information, Zhang is excited to see what the character decides to do next.

“To be honest with you, I don’t know anything. Marvel doesn’t tell us anything! *laughs* But, I’m so excited to see what comes next too and I can’t stop thinking about it myself. Also I ask myself those questions like, “What’s next for her?,” because Xialing is such a complex character and she has so much more for us to explore and discover. Like how did she train herself in her father’s compound and how did she build the fight club all on her own in Macau and in the end credits scene, we can see her sitting on the throne and you can see Razor Fist and Jon Jon standing by her side and what are they going to do next?”

Any Shang-Chi sequel would surely involve the return of the Ten Rings, but whether they would once again be the enemy of Marvel’s newest superhero remains to be seen, with Meng'er Zhang believing that the organization will have undergone some major changes with Xu Xialing at the helm, especially after her reconciliation with her estranged brother.

“Also, the sign says, “The Ten Rings will return,” but what kind of a Ten Rings organization without the actual Ten Rings? You know what I mean? I think, I hope Xialing can get the rings because she’s the new leader of the organization right now and also, I don’t know if you watched the cut scenes that are on the Blu-ray and there’s a scene which is Shang-Chi apologizing to Xialing for abandoning her and that was a very emotional scene. You will also think about, “Has Xialing really forgiven him?,” So, what’s next for the siblings too is really interesting to me and I am as excited as the fans, I cannot wait to find out.”

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, from a screenplay he wrote with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu alongside Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, and Tony Leung, and introduces a newly undiscovered world of martial arts and magic into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie chronicles the story of Shang-Chi, a skilled martial artist who was trained at a young age to be an assassin by his father Wenwu. After leaving the nefarious Ten Rings organization and opting to live a normal life in San Francisco, Shang-Chi is soon drawn back into the clandestine world of the Ten Rings and is forced to confront the past he thought he had left behind.

Meng'er Zhang is far from the only Shang-Chi star to be none-the-wiser regarding plans for a sequel, with lead star Simu Liu having also revealed that Marvel Studios are keeping secrets from him. “Look, I feel there may have been a day and age where they brought the actors in and they were like, ‘Hey buddy, like here’s everything that’s going to happen.’ I just feel like there were certain things that happened that ruined it for all of us," Liu explained. "So, I don’t want to single anyone out, but shoutout to Holland, shoutout to Ruffalo. They really just mucked it up for the rest of us… no, no we have no idea.” While a sequel has not yet been officially confirmed, a recent report claimed that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 2 is due to begin production in 2023.
