Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg has taken to social media to react to the recent release date change. While many projects on Warner Bros.’ DC slate were pushed back, Shazam! Fury of the Gods was one of the few major releases to actually be moved forward. Something that Sandberg is understandably excited about.

Like so many big releases lately, Shazam! Fury of the Gods has played a daring game of release date shuffle. The comic book movie sequel was originally set for release on April 1, 2022, before being delayed to November 4, 2022, and then later to June 2, 2023. Thankfully, audiences no longer have to wait as long to see Shazam! Fury of the Gods, as it has now been moved to December 16, 2022. This puts it on the same release day as the long-awaited sci-fi sequel, Avatar 2. David F. Sandberg isn’t worried though.

Directed by David F. Sandberg from a screenplay by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan, Shazam! Fury of the Gods stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Djimon Hounsou, and Rachel Zegler. The comic book movie follow-up will also add Helen Mirren as Hespera and Lucy Liu as Kalypso, the daughters of Atlas.

Not much is yet known about the plot of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, but going by the title, it is expected to delve far deeper into the mythology of the character and the wider DC universe. One thing that Zachary Levi has revealed, however, is that the sequel will be better than its predecessor.

"I will say that I genuinely — and this is not just lip service — I'm really proud of the first one, I think we made a really, really good movie,” the actor began.” I think the second one is better. I think that we had more time, we had more budget. We had, essentially, the entire cast returning, and we all knew our characters a little bit more; we could kind of sit into them a little bit more. Henry Gayden, who wrote the first script, wrote the second, and he did a fantastic job doing so. Everything just clicked even a little bit more and a little bit more.”

Unfortunately, alongside the good news regarding Shazam! Fury of the Gods, there was also a lot of bad news surrounding the rest of the DC output. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announced that his long-gestating DC outing, Black Adam, will be moving from July to Oct 21, 2022, with Johnson’s other DC adventure, the animated DC League of Super-Pets, moving from May 20 to July 29, a date that was previously held by Black Adam.

The push backs continued with both Justice League members The Flash and Aquaman, with The Flash multiverse movie moving from November 2022 to June 23, 2023, while Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been moved from a December 2022 release date to March 17 next year.
