It looks like once again DC is attempting to follow a tried and tested Marvel formula by adding a well-established member of the Justice League to Shazam! Fury of the Gods. According to a new report by The Illuminerdi, Gal Gadot will be bringing a Wonder Woman cameo to the Zachary Levi-starring sequel to the 2019 hit Shazam! Just like The Flash will be seeing Ben Affleck donning the Batsuit one more time, it appears that DC is realizing that crossing over some of their biggest characters is always going to boost the appeal of certain movies, even if that is just a small cameo, and while we wait of news on Wonder Woman 3, fans will take this appearance happily.

Gal Gadot was last seen in 2020 when Wonder Woman 1984 had a rough arrival in the middle of the pandemic, not really gelling with critics or fans and also being held back financially by having a release dual release on HBO Max and in theaters. The film only managed to pull back $166 million of its $200 million budget at the box office, but the circumstances seem to have seen Warner Bros. not give up on their golden girl. Now with her appearing in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, it is perhaps a sign that they feel it could be a good pay-off for both characters in the long run.

While some may think that Wonder Woman turning up in the Shazam! sequel is a bit of a tag-on move, there is at least a connection shared by the characters. Diana Prince is known to be the daughter of Zeus, and it was the power of Zeus that was gifted to Billy Batson by the wizard Shazam to turn him into his superhero alter-ego. How the appearance will fit into the narrative of the movie, or if it could even be a teaser of something to come in the future – again, not something new to Marvel fans – is something that will not be answered for a long time, as it is still well over a year until we see Zackary Levi donning his cape again in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

There is very little known about the main plot of the sequel at this time, but we do know that Billy Batson will be facing the Daughters of Atlas, who are being played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler, who all made their debuts in footage released earlier this year. Although the title suggests that there could well be appearances from other godly beings – and the Zeus connection could well lead to Wonder Woman’s arrival in that respect.

Whatever the truth turns out to be, Levi previously heaped praise on the film, stating, “I will say that I genuinely — and this is not just lip service — I'm really proud of the first one, I think we made a really, really good movie. I think the second one is better. I think that we had more time, we had more budget. We had, essentially, the entire cast returning, and we all knew our characters a little bit more; we could kind of sit into them a little bit more."

Shazam! Fury of the Gods will make its cinematic debut on June 2nd, 2023.
