Shrek 2: According to The Hollywood Reporter, The theatrical debut of DreamWorks' "Shrek 2" had a true fairy tale ending at the boxoffice this weekend as the cranky but lovable green ogre rang up a stunning estimate of $104.3 million in three days and a record shattering $125.3 million since its release Wednesday.
Warner Bros. Pictures' "Troy" marched into the second spot with an estimated $23.8 million, slipping 49% from its debut and raising the 10-day total for the Brad Pitt starrer to $85.8 million. The Wolfgang Petersen-helmed picture captured about $70 million internationally this weekend and has accumulated an estimated $231.7 million in worldwide gross to date. Reaching the $100 million mark this weekend was Universal's "Van Helsing," which placed third with an estimated $10.2 million on its third frame, moving the total for the Stephen Sommers-directed action-adventure to $100.2 million.
The staggering opening of "Shrek 2," which features the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas, took the industry by surprise with an estimate that many rival distributors thought conservative. Heading into the weekend, most observers, including DreamWorks, had the sequel landing in the $65 million-$75 million range for the three-day session, which would have brought the five-day total to the mid-$90 million level.
