As nostalgia continues to reign in 2022, another 1980s film reboot is on the way. This summer, it was reported that Selena Gomez was on board to produce a reboot of the popular 1988 comedy Working Girl. Sigourney Weaver, one of the original film's stars, weighed in on the upcoming production during Elle's Women in Hollywood event. The actress told The Hollywood Reporter:

“Go for it. I think it’s a great instinct to want to do that again. It’s a kind of eternal story, you know. But seen in the new light, it’s especially interesting to think of Katharine double-crossing her assistant in today’s world. It would be worse, wouldn’t it? It would really suck. So I don’t know, I’m really excited to see it.”

The original film followed Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith), a smart and ambitious woman who is mistreated by her stockbroker boss. After quitting her position, Tess gains employment as the assistant to Katharine Parker (Weaver). After Katharine's true colors are revealed, Tess takes over her identity in an effort to advance her professional career. The film also starred Harrison Ford, and was directed by Mike Nichols.

The 1988 comedy was a huge box office and critical success, earning six Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Director for Nichols, and Best Actress for Griffith. Weaver and Joan Cusack were both nominated for Best Supporting Actress for their roles. Although she didn't win the Oscar, Weaver secured two wins at the Golden Globes the same year, including Best Supporting Actress for Working Girl and Best Actress in Drama for Gorillas in the Mist.

Weaver began acting in the 1970s, and gained popularity for her role in Ridley Scott's 1979 Alien. She later starred in the film's sequels: Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien Resurrection. Other notable credits include appearances in the Ghostbusters franchise, 1492: Conquest of Paradise, Ice Storm, Infamous, and Avatar, among others. She will next appear in Avatar: The Way of Water.

The Working Girl reboot is currently in early development stages, so much about the film remains unknown, but when asked if she would be open to appearing in the film, Weaver said:

“I wouldn’t force myself on them. I can’t think of what I’d be playing except the old person who runs the agency going by with a cane, [but] I’m sure she [Gomez] could think up anything.”

It is unknown if Gomez will appear in the film, but she will be producing alongside 20th Century Studios. Diary of a Future President creator Ilana Pena will write the script.
