Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings lead Simu Liu cannot wait to reunite with director Destin Daniel Cretton on the upcoming sequel. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 2 has now been officially confirmed, with the actor excited to further explore the newly unveiled world of martial arts, mythical beasts, and marvelllous mythology.

"I guess I wasn't the most surprised, given everything that had happened. I'm so relieved to hear that [Cretton] was confirmed to come back, again not a surprise, but it's just so good to feel the engine turning again, and to be like, okay, great, we get to tell more story and delve deeper into the characters, and hopefully provide more of those badass fight sequences."

The first Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings introduces a new Marvel mainstay, Shang-Chi, a master of martial arts with a troubled past. The movie also re-introduces the sinister Ten Rings organization while opening up the MCU to a whole new world that certainly warrants further exploration. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings follows Shang-Chi as he is forced to confront his past after his father Wenwu AKA The Mandarin, the leader of the Ten Rings organization, draws Shang-Chi and his sister Xialing into a search for a mythical village.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings continued the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s historical success, receiving rave reviews from critics and audiences alike as well as earning $432 million worldwide. Such a box office and critical triumph all-but made a sequel inevitable, with Marvel Studios recently announcing the project, and thus allowing director Destin Daniel Cretton and star Simu Liu to “delve deeper” into the characters – something which Liu revealed he cannot wait to do in a clip shared by Twitter user @PhaseZeroCB.

While story details have yet to be revealed, Cretton has since revealed where he is in the process, while teasing that Shang-Chi 2 will continue some of the loose ends left at the end of the first outing. "I’ve done [zero writing]. It’s a fun place to be right now,” the filmmaker said. “Everything is a possibility. We’re just tossing very loose ideas around and we’ll start to hone in on something, hopefully. There are a lot of ideas that we had in the opener, and some of those ideas are planted as questions, by the end of our movie. There are things that we potentially want to explore in the future. Everything changes so much, so it’s hard to say how many of those ideas will actually make it to the finish line, but there are many of them there."

The conclusion of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings offers a duo of post credits scenes, both of which left clues regarding the direction of the follow-up. The first shows Shang-Chi being inducted into The Avengers, while the other has Shang-Chi's sister, Xialing, taking over the sinister Ten Rings and thus making her a likely choice for the Shang-Chi 2 villain. The first Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is available now on Disney+.
