Another contender is stepping into the competitive world of animation! The studio Skydance Animation is teaming up with Apple Original films to present their debut feature-length animated film, Luck, on August 5th! This news comes from Animation Magazine.

Luck is the story of Sam, the unluckiest person in the world. When she ages out of foster care, she stumbles into the Land of Luck. Sam soon embarks on a quest that could change her luck forever, with the help of all the magical creatures she meets and befriends along the way.

Along with the release announcement, Apple and Skydance have also revealed the voices behind the colorful cast of characters! The leading role of Sam will be Eva Noblezada (Miss Saigon, Hadestown). Lil Rel Howery (Free Guy, Judas and the Black Messiah) will play Marv, the owner of a flower shop where Sam gets her first job. Adelynn Spoon (Watchmen, Tell Me Your Secrets) will voice Hazel, Sam’s roommate and best friend at the Summerland Home for Girls. Hazel believes that she’ll be adopted by her forever family just as soon as she finds a real lucky penny, which Sam sets off to find for her.

Among the cast of lucky (and not so lucky) fellows are Simon Pegg (Ice Age, Star Trek Beyond) will voice Bob, an unusually lucky black cat from the Land of Luck. The Head of Security for the Land of Luck is The Captain, who will be voiced by the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner Whoopi Goldberg. Flula Borg (Suicide Squad 2, Trolls World Tour) will voice Jeff the Unicorn, an engineer who distributes the good and bad luck around the world. The CEO of Good Luck, The Dragon, will be voice by the two-time Academy Award winner Jane Fonda. Colin O’Donoghue (Once Upon a Time, The Right Stuff) will voice Gerry, a leprechaun. Finally, there is John Ratzenberger (Cheers, The Empire Strikes Back) as Rooty, a bad luck root and self-appointed mayor of bad luck!

Bringing Luck to Life

The colorful movie is helmed by Emmy Award-winning Peggy Holmes, whose previous directing credits include The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning, Secret of the Wings and The Pirate Fairy. The original screenplay was written by Kiel Murray (Raya and the Last Dragon, Cars, Cars 3) and Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger (Kung Fu Panda 2, Trolls). John Lasseter, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and David Eisenmann are producing.

Luck will be the first feature in the Apple Original Films and Skydance Animation partnership lineup. Two other films in this deal are the upcoming Spellbound and the series The Search for WondLa. Luck follows the success of the original short Blush, written and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Joe Mateo (Prep & Landing, Big Hero 6), with music composed by Hollywood Music in Media Awards winner Joy Ngiaw (Red, Fish Head). The short is now streaming on Apple TV. It seems as if Apple is turning into a strong competitor as a streaming service. Who else can’t wait to see what comes next?
