Following the recent criticism from Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage regarding the depiction of dwarfs in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Snow White, a report has now stated that, instead of the seven dwarfs, the movie will instead feature “magical creatures.” In a report by TheWrap, which details Disney’s response following the criticism, several details have now been revealed about the characters that will adventure alongside the titular Disney princess.

“Instead of dwarfs, Disney will fill the void with a group of what they describe as “magical creatures,” according to casting sheets that TheWrap has seen. (They are currently looking for voice actors to give these creatures personality.) It’s unclear if they will inhabit the same roles as the dwarfs – will they be mining for jewels? Will they have names like Sleepy, Grumpy, and Bashful? – but these magical creatures will be the substitutes for the original seven dwarfs.”

The revelation that several mysteriously vague “magical creatures” will replace the familiar seven dwarfs comes after Peter Dinklage took issue with Disney’s embracing of certain diversities while ignoring others. "I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. You’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there,” the actor said. “It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that f--king backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f--k are you doing man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

Shortly after Dinklage’s disapproval of Disney’s plans for a Snow White remake, the studio provided a statement revealing that they will be taking a “different approach” to the depiction of certain characters. “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community,” a Disney spokesperson said, per Variety. “We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”

So, it seems this difference will involve the inclusion of magical creatures rather than dwarfs — a necessary change that should be welcomed by modern audiences. While it is unknown what exactly these creatures will be, they will likely keep some elements of the original movie, such as the names.

Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White is set to be directed by The Amazing Spider-Man's Marc Webb. Based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale, which was adapted for the screen in 1937 by Walt Disney Productions and marked the studio’s first animated feature film, Snow White tells the story of an exiled princess, an evil queen who wants to kill her, and the seven dwarfs become her friends.

Starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot with new songs written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, production on Snow White is slated to begin in 2022.
