This article contains spoilers for season three of Solar Opposites.Adult animated comedies can be pretty hit or miss quality-wise, but Hulu’s Solar Opposites has proven it has what it takes to stand out from the crowd and be more than just a Rick and Morty clone. Although the series’ future felt precarious recently due to the charges brought against co-creator Justin Roiland, the show has cut ties and will continue onward into its planned fourth and fifth seasons.

Solar Opposites season three left its many narrative threads on cliffhangers: the corrupt SilverCops left Glen to die, Cherie’s baby Pezlie has been stolen by the Bowinian Church inside the Wall, and the titular alien family has pledged to live normal, sci-fi free lives. What does it all mean, and how might it all play out in the seasons to come?

What’s Going on With Pupa?

The pupa is at the center of the titular Solar Opposites’ mission from the beginning. Without him, Korvo, Terry, Jesse, and Yumyulack wouldn’t have any hope of terraforming the Earth and recreating their home planet. It’s only fitting that the show’s narrative is hanging on his emotional stability.

The season three finale, The Fog of Pupa, begins with the Solar Opposites engaging in some typical sci-fi frivolity with a living incarnation of a Hungry Hungry Hippos board game. Their fun is cut short, however, when Pupa is caught by mall security for stealing. Pupa has become an angsty teen, lashing out however he can for attention.

Pupa’s outbursts ultimately form a massive fog cloud that envelopes the entire town. Teenage monsters lurk in the fog, killing anyone in their path. The family can’t conceive of how they can calm the angst-ridden Pupa, but his teachers can. They tell Korvo and Terry off for failing to provide a balanced, structured home life for Pupa.

Without any other recourse, the Solar Opposites decide that they will live out their lives on Earth as normally as possible for Pupa’s sake. In a fittingly depressing montage set to Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads, we see Korvo and Terry slaving away at mundane office jobs while Jesse and Yumyulack trudge through school. They hate their lives, but they’re happy to do it for the sake of Pupa.

Series co-creator Mike McMahan told MovieWeb that season four will at least start out as “a more straight-laced office show.” Of course, the Solar Opposites aren’t the type to hold in their sci-fi strangeness for long, and it will only be a matter of time before they break out into unexpected shenanigans.

Jesse and Yumyulack are sure to be the same, considering their proclivity for the over-the-top and bizarre. Especially if these two find out about Korvo and Terry messing up, it won’t be long before they dig out a ray gun or two to get their way. It's anyone's guess how Pupa will react, but if his actions in season three are any indication, it won't be good.

Inside the Wall

The Wall was an unexpected fan favorite in seasons one and two, so it’s great to see it explored more in season three. As could be expected, things aren’t going well in the Wall: turmoil brews as another faction vies for power. Halk is presumably dead, Cherie is detained, and baby Pezlie is branded and made to be the mythical savior the Wall needs.

Solar Opposites fans have clambered for more stories about the wall and the ever-changing society within it, with some even calling for a dedicated spin-off series. Though this isn’t likely, we will get more of this show within a show.

Because Halk dies off-screen, fans have theorized that the character isn’t dead. Considering the show’s penchant for showing gruesome deaths, it is rather telling that we don’t get this for Halk. With Cherie being held by the Bowinian Church and kept away from her baby, it’s possible we’ll see Halk come to her aid when she needs it most.

As the first child born within the wall, and therefore the first child conceived and born by jellybean-sized parents, Pezlie is a miracle baby that holds incredible cultural significance to her tiny brethren. Next season, we’ll likely see plenty more political games with Pezlie as a pawn.

The SilverCops Return

The SilverCops are a new addition to Solar Opposites season three, and McMahan and others have confirmed that the corrupt team of intergalactic police will be back.

When we last saw the SilverCops, Glen, the newest recruit and former neighbor to the Solar Opposites family, has fled. He’s seen behind the curtain and realizes the corruption within the Silver Cops ranks, and they don’t like that. With Glen naked, afraid, and alone in the woods, the SilverCops presume that he won’t survive without his silver suit.

The SilverCops will think he’s died here, but Glen is ripe to come back and fight for justice. Next season, we’re sure to see more of Glen, maybe this time as a newly dubbed GoldCop.

Korvo's New Voice

Another major change coming to Solar Opposites is one that will hopefully not affect the show’s dynamic. With Justin Roiland out as producer and voice actor, Korvo will be recast. There isn’t news yet on whom this might be, but thanks to the Solar Opposites massive assortment of ray guns that do pretty much anything, it's hard to imagine they don’t have one that can justify a vocal shift.

There isn’t an official release date yet for Solar Opposites season four, but it’s likely to appear some time in Summer of 2023.
