Saying there are spoilers for a show like Solar Opposites is like needing a spoiler warning for Looney Tunes; this is a show where the main characters once murdered each other, reincarnated as trees, and then splintered off into their normal alien selves all over again. Regardless, season three of Solar Opposites does have some of the biggest moments in the show so far, with major (and actually permanent) character deaths and dramatic changes in emotional arcs.

Perhaps the biggest surprise for season three comes at the end of episode 11 (The Fog of Pupa), this year's finale. As Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads plays out (in a wonderful needle drop for the show), the Solar Opposites gang decides to have a 'normal' life, wanting to be a proper family to support and raise the Pupa. "From this moment forward, we have to change our ways," Korvo says. "So no more awesome sci-fi stuff?" Yumyulack asks. "No, I think we have to cut everything from our lives that makes us a special, unique family. We need to sand our situation down so that it's palatable to a broader and more corporate-approved audience, I mean, the Pupa."

The finale then initiates a time jump, and six months later, Yumyulack and Jesse are going to school without any sci-fi gadgets or adventures, and Terry and Korvo have a monotonous, soul-crushing office job, but the Pupa is happy. "I love you guys," it says, "and I love Moana." Fans are asking what this means for Solar Opposites moving forward; will it retcon this development and scrap it all in order to get to the "awesome sci-fi stuff" again, or will it actually follow this storyline? When MovieWeb spoke to Mike McMahan and Josh Brycel, co-creators and producers of the series, they strongly suggested that they're following through on this new development.

"When we start season four, it has become an office show," McMahan says, "and it really is a more straight-laced office show. But don't worry, because Terry and Korvo cannot commit to getting that right." McMahan continues:

It gets resolved. Not in the first episode [though], and it takes a minute, but we really wanted to end the season by being like, "Hey, guess what? Next season is like The Office!" Just change the dynamic of it a bit. Little Buddy is still there, like, it's things you don't expect and things you don't get in a linear, network animated show are our bread and butter.

Hulu Gives Solar Opposites the Freedom to Change With Seasons 3 and 4

Whether it becomes a workplace comedy like The Office or something even more downbeat to match the melancholy of the finale, it'll be wonderful either way. This is definitely a change in tone and content for Solar Opposites. "One of the great things about our show is that we love to do things that nobody asked for," Brycel says, and the freedom of being on a streaming service has allowed them to experiment with things like this. "Hulu is amazing. They are the best partner. I mean, we make fun of them all the time, we're constantly taking stuff to them and thinking that they're definitely going to say no, and they do not say no. They're an amazing partner, and they've rarely said no to anything, except if we make fun of Star Wars stuff."

"Yeah, Disney doesn't like us making fun of Disney IP," McMahan laughs. "The way Hulu says yes to stuff is like when my kid says, 'I'm going to do something stupid,' and I'm like, 'Alright. You gotta learn, I guess." Hulu has said yes to a lot in season three, which introduces a new show-within-the-show with Silvercops (which audiences will be seeing much more of in season four) and continues experimenting with the brilliant dramatic narrative in The Wall.

Season four is almost written but, as McMahan says, "it takes us a year to animate," so don't expect these surprises and changes for another year. In the meantime, season three of Solar Opposites is now streaming on Hulu.
