A trio of new posters for the upcoming video game movie sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2 offers a brand-new look at the villainous echidna, Knuckles, alongside heroic duo Sonic and Tails. Released courtesy of Twitter user Tails' Channel, these Chinese New Year posters tease the big-screen debut of Knuckles, the fan-favorite character who is sure to cause all manner of chaos for Sonic when the sequel hits screens later this year.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 picks up following the events of the surprisingly successful first movie, which hit screens in 2020. After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and his newfound friends and housemates Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees director Jeff Fowler return to helm the sequel, which will also bring back the likes of Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog, alongside Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, and James Marsden as Tom Wachowski and Tika Sumpter as his wife, Maddie. The cast of characters will grow larger this time around, however, with both Dr. Robotnik and Sonic the Hedgehog acquiring a partner. Sonic will team up with the two-tailed fox, Miles "Tails" Prower, who will be voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey. Robotnik, meanwhile, will unite with Knuckles, a mighty red echidna with the voice of The Suicide Squad star Idris Elba.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Director Has Compared Knuckles to The Winter Soldier

Sonic the Hedgehog fans cannot wait to see Knuckles do battle on the big screen, with director Jeff Fowler recently hyping up his appearance by comparing the character’s presence to both The Terminator and Marvel antihero The Winter Soldier.

“I always have kind of joked he’s like the Terminator or the Winter Soldier coming into our movie world where he’s spent his life training to be a warrior,” the filmmaker teased. “The echidnas are all about honor. Everything about him is a total contrast to Sonic. Sonic has no training. Sonic sort of flies by the seat of his pants, he has no discipline, and Knuckles is all disciplined. So it was always about, sort of from a storytelling standpoint, all of the great contrasts we could create between these two characters, and just put them on a collision course in a really great way, and just see that Sonic’s got a lot to learn.”

The first Sonic the Hedgehog saw huge success, becoming the sixth-highest-grossing movie of 2020. With the addition of both Knuckles and Tails, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is expected to be even more successful when it speeds onto screens in the United States on April 8, 2022, by Paramount Pictures in association with Sega Sammy Group.
