Part meta and part reboot, the new Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers movie is pretty unique from Disney's other live-action remakes. The film imagines famous cartoon characters as they'd be in the real world, as the titular Disney rodents are now the washed-up versions of the superstars they were decades prior with the original cartoon series. The nature of this storyline has also allowed for special appearances of various other well-known animated characters, and given the recent success of the Sonic the Hedgehog films, it was no surprise to see the titular speedster show up for a cameo. What was shocking, however, was Sonic's appearance. This isn't the Sonic that was ultimately featured in the theatrical releases of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but the "Ugly Sonic" with the character's original design that was shown in the film's first trailer. Due to immense fan backlash to the design, the first Sonic film was delayed so the character could be redesigned to look more reminiscent of the video game version, seemingly putting Ugly Sonic to bed.In Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, it is revealed that Ugly Sonic has been struggling since getting cut from Sonic the Hedgehog. He is present at a comic convention where he is selling signed photos of himself and talking about how he's been down on his luck, though he insists he's laughing with his critics because he's "in on the joke." Ugly Sonic also says he's preparing to star in his own reality series where he does ride-alongs with the FBI that's called Ugly Sonic, Uglier Crimes. The cameo has stood out for many viewers as a particularly enjoyable moment in the film.

Sonic the Hedgehog Has Thrived After His Redesign

Paramount

It was clear when the first trailer was released that fans Sonic the Hedgehog had some major problems with its design. Many viewers were sharing the trailer and it was getting a lot of views, but not for the right reasons, as the majority fo the comments were negative. Sonic was considered to be "ugly," leading to his new name of "Ugly Sonic" as seen in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers. Sonic voice Ben Schwartz previously revealed how the passion of the fan base led to the redesign of the character.

"The way that I saw it first I think was on the trailer," Schwartz said, per Cinemablend. "I had to do ADR for the actual trailer because up until then it was all very temp. But I believe the trailer had to be done very quickly or something like that. So the first time I saw it was then. And then when it came out and the reaction it got when it came out. First of all we didn't know if anyone would care. We care because we like video games and movies it seems."

He added, "But the biggest thing we learned from that was that when it came out so many people were so vocal and it became a huge thing. It got passed around so much. It may have not been the most positive reason why it was getting passed around, but it got passed around so much and so people had such heartfelt passionate ideas for it. That the biggest thing we learned was 'Oh, people care a lot. Let's look at this and figure it out.'"
