Just one week after director Tim Miller left his highly-anticipated sequel Deadpool 2, the filmmaker has found his next project. Today we have word that Tim Miller has signed on to develop and executive produce Sony Pictures' Sonic the Hedgehog movie. The project will mark quite the drastic departure from the R-rated Deadpool, with Sonic the Hedgehog being crafted as a live-action/CGI hybrid.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Tim Miller will develop the project with his longtime Blur Studios partner Jeff Fowler, who will make his directorial debut with the project. Neal Moritz is also attached to produce this video game adaptation, with Patrick Casey and Josh Miller (Golan the Insatiable) writing the script. Here's what Tim Miller had to say about his partner Jeff Fowler.

"Jeff is an incredible director with strong story instincts. The world of Sonic presents the perfect opportunity for him to leverage his experience in animation to bring new dimension to this iconic character."

Sony Pictures and SEGA first announced this video game adaptation back in June 2014, when Evan Susser and Van Robichaux were originally tapped to write the screenplay. The initial announcement revealed this adaptation will try to "capture Sonic's irreverent tone and spirit," while bringing back a number of iconic characters from the game franchise, such as Dr. Eggman. For more than two decades, Sonic has been one of the world's biggest gaming icons and a $1 billion franchise with more than 140 million games sold.

The last we heard about this Sonic movie was in February, when Sega Sammy Group CEO Hajime Satomi confirmed that the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is being planned for a 2018 release date. While this will be the first time this iconic character will be featured on the big screen, Sonic has been featured on the small screen before. The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in 1993, which starred Jaleel White (Family Matters) voicing the title character.

Sony Pictures and Marza Animation Planet, a CG animation film production company of the Sega Sammy Group, will be the production titles behind the movie. Marza's Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi will produce alongside Neal Moritz. Tim Miller will executive produce alongside Toby Ascher, with Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons of DJ2 Entertainment serving as co-producers. Hopefully we'll hear more about the Sonic the Hedgehog movie very soon.
