One of the brightest spots of Sonic the Hedgehog was Jim Carrey in his unforgettable portrayal as the villainous Dr. Robotnik. The role allowed for Carrey to deliver a comedy performance that was more reminiscent of his classic comedies, and the fans were definitely on board. In April, we'll all see Carrey giving more life to the villain with his second portrayal in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Ahead of the sequel's arrival this spring, director Jeff Fowler had a lot to say about what fans can expect in a new interview with Collider. Fowler touches on Carrey's return as Dr. Robotnik, and while he agrees that the actor was fantastic in the first movie, it sounds like he'll have a lot more to do in the sequel. As Fowler explains, a big reason for the great performance is that Carrey has been enjoying himself immensely in the part, having basically transformed into the mustache-twirling baddie from the games.

"As incredible as Jim was in the first movie, I feel like this version of Robotnik has allowed him to just go even further and tap into all the stuff that everyone loves about Jim Carrey. He just loves playing this character, has so much fun doing it, brings so many ideas every day to the set. It's just completely his creation, and I think audiences are just going to have such an amazing time with it. How can you not? The mustache is amazing. He has literally transformed himself into the Eggman that the fans know from the games, and it's awesome."

As far as directing Jim Carrey goes, Fowler describes the experience as pretty much just letting him know how his character fits into the storyline and how he interacts with others. From there, Carrey can essentially be set loose to do what he does, injecting a lot of his own unique personality into the entertaining character.

"It's really just giving him the information he needs in terms of what we're doing in the film and knowing how that scene sort of plays into the broader sort of storyline, and then just unleashing him. He really is just the energy he brings, the intelligence just as an actor. He has such incredible instincts just about movies in general, let alone about the character he plays. So yeah, he's just an incredible resource. He's made so many films. He's just got such an incredible range of talents. It's awesome. I can't believe I've had the opportunity now to make two movies with him, having just grown up and loved so many of his movies as a kid. So it really is just extraordinary."

Ben Schwartz is also back as the voice of Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Idris Elba voices Knuckles while Colleen O'Shaughnessey provides the voice of Tails. Other cast members include James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, and Shemar Moore. Jeff Fowler directs using a screenplay by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to be released in movie theaters on April 8, 2022. This news comes to us from Collider.
