Sony is tapping into the most popular sport on the planet for its next venture. According to Variety, the studio has picked up The Damned United, an adaptation of Dave Peace's book about British soccer coach Tom Clough.

The film will be set in 1974, during Clough's notorious 44-day tenure as the coach of the Leeds United soccer team, which at the time was one of the worst teams in all of England. The film will also flashback to the 1960s as well.

Michael Sheen will play Clough and Jim Broadbent, Timothy Spall and Colm Meaney have also just joined the cast.

Peter Morgan (The Queen) wrote the adaptation and Tom Hooper (John Adams) will direct.

Shooting is set to begin on May 25.
