According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Animation picked up the rights to The Familiars in a low- to mid-seven-figure deal.

The property is a children's fantasy book series that was written by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson.

This new series follows three young wizard apprentices who, after being taken to an evil kingdom by a mean queen, turn to their animal companions -- an alley cat, a blue jay and a tree frog -- for help.

Sam Raimi and Josh Donen are planning to produce this project through their Stars Road Entertainment banner. Epstein and Jacobson will also be writing the script.

The writers' literary agent, Markus Hoffmann of Regal Literary, initially submitted a partial manuscript and a detailed chapter outline for the first book as well as short synopses for the second and third volumes at the Book Expo America convention. Shortly after that HarperCollins Children's jumped in and acquired North American rights to the series.
