According to Home Media Retailing and Video Business, with the first Blu-ray disc player from Samsung Electronics scheduled for release on May 23, 2006, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, along with Lionsgate, plan to make their first Blu-ray disc releases available that day as well.

Sony is going to release “eight Blu-ray Disc titles” on May 23 then “eight more June 13.” “According to the studio, the arrival in stores of the Samsung player ‘will be followed shortly by Blu-ray Disc players from Pioneer and Sony, along with a Blu-ray Disc-compatible VAIO PC from Sony.’”

The first eight Blu-ray Disc titles from Sony are 50 First Dates, The Fifth Element, Hitch, House of Flying Daggers, A Knight's Tale, The Last Waltz, Resident Evil: Apocalypse and XXX.

Then on June 13 they will release Kung Fu Hustle, Legends of the Fall, Robocop, Stealth, Species, S.W.A.T. and The Terminator.

Many believe that the first new Blu-ray release will be Sony’s Underworld: Evolution, which will come out on DVD and Blu-ray in early part of summer.

On March 28, the first HD DVD titles will hit stores courtesy of Warner Home Video.
