With Sony’s latest announcement that Morbius will be delayed, the film has now been delayed more times than The New Mutants. Morbius, starring Jared Leto, was supposed to come out on January 28, 2022. However, Morbius has now been pushed to April 1, 2022, after a recent surge of COVID cases due to the Omicron variant.

Geek To Me Radio shared a tweet comparing how many times Morbius has been delayed and how many times The New Mutants was delayed. The new release date is Morbius’s fifth date change while The New Mutants had four-date changes.

However, one thing to point out in the date changes is the length of time within delays. Morbius was supposed to first come out on July 10, 2020, and will now come out about 9 months later. The New Mutants was supposed to come out on April 13, 2018, and didn’t come out until August 28, 2020.

Morbius can at least blame its release struggles on COVID-19. There haven’t been many reports about behind-the-scenes drama, which plagued The New Mutants along with business conflicts as well. The New Mutants also had to deal with Disney acquiring Fox which led to a shuffle in release dates for many of Fox’s films at the time. The New Mutants was one of the most unfortunate, but somewhat hilarious, situations to follow in Hollywood.

Once The New Mutants came out, it was basically put out of its misery, debuting at a time in the pandemic where many theaters weren’t open anyways. It didn’t fare well at the box office and who knows how it would’ve done if it was released during a time of normalcy.

Morbius has a more positive situation going on. It seems like Sony is simply delaying the film again out of an abundance of caution just in case the Omicron situation worsens. Sony had plenty of success in 2021 with both Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

With the multiverse unleashed within the Spider-Man universe after the events of No Way Home, many fans are looking forward to the next entry in Sony’s Spider-Man universe. Trailers have looked good so far and certain MCU tie-ins, such as an appearance from Michael Keaton’s Vulture have fans wondering where this film takes place.

Morbius will be released in theaters (hopefully) in April. It is directed by Daniel Espinosa and stars Leto, Jared Harris, Tyrese Gibson, Matt Smith, and Adria Arjona.
