Steve Carell is heading back to space, as the comedy series Space Force has been renewed for a second season at Netflix. In an effort to reduce the costs of producing the pricey series, production will also be moved from Los Angeles to Vancouver with plans to begin filming in 2021. When it was ordered to series last year, Space Force set a record for talent with Carell earning over $1 million per episode for co-creating, executive producing, and starring in the lead role, so developing the series is very expensive.

There are going to be some changes to the creative team moving forward as well. The new season will introduce Norm Hiscock as a new co-showrunner, serving alongside frequent collaborator Greg Daniels. Series star Jimmy O. Yang has also joined the writing staff. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, the hope at Netflix is that adding another season of the show "will allow Space Force the runway to grow creatively and better connect with viewers and critics alike much in the same way The Office broke out in its subsequent seasons."

As Space Force reunites Steve Carell and Greg Daniels, respectively the lead star and creator of the American version of The Office, there seems to be a lot of potential in the new comedy series. Unfortunately, the freshman season was met with mixed reviews, leaving the future of the series uncertain. It's similar to what happened when The Office first debuted on television in the United States, with the iconic comedy's first season also garnering some rather harsh reviews. As we know now, the tide changed quickly with the NBC show's second season, and Netflix appears to be keeping their fingers crossed for the same results.

Space Force follows a group of people who serve as the members of the sixth branch of the United States Armed Forces, the United States Space Force. A workplace comedy series, the show stars Carell as Mark Naird, the Space Force's first Chief of Space Operations, who is tasked with a mission to return to the moon by 2024 at the behest of the president. Along with Carell, the series stars John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Diana Silvers, Tawny Newsome, Lisa Kudrow, Jane Lynch, Diedrich Bader, and Jimmy O. Yang.

The brass at Netflix rolling the dice again with Space Force could also be related to The Office preparing to leave the streaming service. For years, The Office has served as one of the most-watched titles the streaming service has to offer, often performing much better than many Netflix Originals. Beginning in 2021, the NBC comedy will permanently leave Netflix as it heads to the new streaming service Peacock, and the move is undoubtedly a big blow for the streamer. If the stars align just right, they might be able to capture lightning in a bottle again with Carell and Daniels.

There's no word yet on when season 2 of Space Force might begin streaming, but production will reportedly begin next year. This news comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter.
